Self-Test of Automatic Front Passenger Airbag Shutoff
When the vehicle is switched on, a self-test is performed during which the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicator lamps light up simultaneously.
The status of the front passenger airbag is displayed via the indicator lamps after the self-test:
- ON lit: The front passenger airbag may deploy during an accident. The lamp goes out after 60 seconds.
- ON and OFF not lit: The front passenger airbag may deploy during an accident.
- OFF lit: The front passenger airbag is disabled and will not deploy in an accident.
If both the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF indicator lamp and the restraint system warning lamp light up simultaneously, the front passenger seat may not be used. Do not install a child restraint system in this case. Have the airbag system checked immediately at a qualified workshop.
Status Display
If the front passenger seat is occupied, ensure the airbag status is correct for the current situation:
- After installing a rearward-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat, PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF must be lit continuously.
Warning: Risk of injury or fatal injury when using a rearward-facing child restraint while the co-driver airbag is enabled. Always ensure the co-driver airbag is disabled. NEVER use a rearward-facing child restraint on a seat with an ENABLED FRONT AIRBAG; DEATH or SERIOUS INJURY to the CHILD can occur.
When installing child restraints on the front passenger seat, follow vehicle-specific instructions. Depending on child stature, the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF lamp may be off—if so, use a rear seat instead.
Warning: Risk of injury or death due to incorrect positioning of forward-facing child restraints. Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible and fully retract the seat cushion. Ensure shoulder belt is correctly routed on the child restraint system.
PRE-SAFE® System (Anticipatory Occupant Protection)
PRE-SAFE® detects certain critical driving situations and implements pre-emptive measures:
- Tightens seat belts on driver and front passenger seats.
- Closes side windows.
- Closes sliding sunroof (if equipped).
- Moves front passenger seat to favorable position (vehicles with memory function).
- Increases air pressure in multicontour seat side bolsters.
- Generates a brief sound signal to stimulate protective reflexes (PRE-SAFE® Sound).
Note: Automatic seat adjustments may damage objects in the footwell or behind the seat. Stow objects in a suitable place.
Pre-emptive measures are reversed if an accident does not occur. Some settings may need to be manually reset.
PRE-SAFE® PLUS
PRE-SAFE® PLUS detects imminent rear impacts and takes anticipatory measures such as tightening seat belts and increasing brake pressure while stationary. Measures are reversed if an accident does not occur.
System Limits
- System will not initiate action while backing up.
- System will not apply brakes while driving or entering/exiting parking spaces with Active Parking Assist.
PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side
If an imminent side impact is detected, PRE-SAFE® Impulse Side moves the upper body of the front seat occupant toward the center of the vehicle by inflating an air cushion in the outer seat bolster, increasing distance from the door.
If deployed or faulty, a display message will appear: "PRE-SAFE Impulse Side Inoperative."
Post-Collision Measures
- Automatic braking to minimize further collision severity.
- Activate hazard warning lights.
- Trigger automatic emergency call.
- Switch off engine, fuel supply, unlock doors, lower windows, switch on interior lighting, display emergency guide on central display.
Safely Transporting Children in the Vehicle
Always observe safety notes when children are traveling. Be diligent when securing children in the child restraint system.
- Use a child restraint suitable for this Mercedes-Benz vehicle.
- Ensure the child restraint is appropriate for the age, weight, and size of the child.
- Use a suitable vehicle seat for installing the child restraint system.
Accident statistics show children are generally safer on rear seats. Mercedes-Benz strongly advises installing child restraints on a rear seat whenever possible.
