Driving Assistance Package and Active Safety Systems

Active Steering Assist

  • If deactivated, accelerator, brake, and steering wheel are monitored
  • Warning issued if steering wheel is not held or pedal not depressed, and vehicle risks leaving lane
  • If driver does not steer for a considerable time:
    • Visual warning displayed
    • If no confirmation, warning tone sounds along with visual message
  • % Follow contact detection instructions for Active Steering Assist

Active Emergency Stop Assist

  • Warning sequence:
    1. Display message appears
    2. Warning tone sounds in addition to display
    3. Beginning Emergency Stop message, continuous tone, vehicle stops accelerating, seat belt tensioned slightly and repeatedly
    4. Vehicle speed reduced incrementally to standstill with sharp brake impulses
  • % Lane change to right-hand lane may occur depending on country (only one lane, not hard shoulder)
  • % Automatic braking deactivates Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC; hazard lights may activate
  • When stationary:
    • Vehicle secured with electric parking brake
    • Vehicle unlocked
    • Emergency call placed if possible
  • Cancellation options:
    • Before braking: steer to cancel
    • After braking:
      • Accelerating or braking → emergency stop canceled, warning message and tone remain
      • Steering → power-assisted steering canceled, warning message and tone remain, vehicle continues braking
  • % Maximum three emergency stops per driving cycle; then Active Steering Assist and Emergency Stop Assist deactivate

System Limits

  • Vehicles without Driving Assistance Package: inactive if Active Lane Keeping Assist not detecting lanes or deactivated
  • Vehicles with Driving Assistance Package: inactive if Active Lane Keeping Assist not detecting lanes
  • Observe system limits for:
    • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC
    • Active Steering Assist
    • Active Lane Change Assist

Active Lane Change Assist

  • Supports driver when changing lanes, activated by brief indicator use
  • Conditions:
    • On freeway or high-speed road
    • Speed 45–110 mph (70–180 km/h)
    • Neighboring lane separated by broken lane marking
    • No vehicle or obstacle detected in adjacent lane
    • Active Lane Change Assist selected in multimedia system
    • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist active
  • Driver display:
    • Green arrow → lane change initiated
    • Red arrow → lane change canceled
    • ± symbol shows with green or gray arrows depending on availability
  • % Lane change begins after brief turn signal if no obstacle detected; flashing green arrow indicates active lane change
  • Lane change canceled if:
    • Obstacle detected or surrounding conditions change
    • Driver steers with too much force or opposite direction
    • Turn signal moved opposite direction
    • Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC or Active Steering Assist deactivated
    • Vehicle cannot make lane change as planned
  • & WARNING Risk of accident when changing lane to occupied lane. Always check neighboring lane and monitor lane change.
  • & WARNING Risk if Lane Change Assist unexpectedly stops functioning. Keep hands on steering wheel and monitor traffic.
  • % Sensors adjust automatically after delivery; unavailable or partially available during teach-in process
