Tesla Cybertruck 2025-2026 Shift Using the Touchscreen

Shift Using the Touchscreen

When you press the brake pedal while Cybertruck is parked, the drive mode strip displays on the driver's side of the touchscreen. Use it to shift:

  • Swipe up for Drive
  • Swipe down for Reverse
  • Press the drive mode strip for Park

The touchscreen always shows the current gear. The drive mode strip is hidden at highway speeds. To display it at any time, swipe right from the left edge of the touchscreen.

To shift into Park when driving below 5 mph (8 km/h), touch the drive mode strip while pressing the brake. In emergencies above 5 mph (8 km/h), press and hold the strip to slowly stop the vehicle.

Note: To shift between Drive and Reverse, speed must be below 5 mph (8 km/h). The touchscreen is the preferred method for shifting, but if unavailable, the overhead console drive mode selector must be used.

Auto Shift from Park

Auto Shift from Park is a BETA feature and is disabled by default. Enable it via Controls > Dynamics > Auto Shift from Park. When enabled, Cybertruck automatically selects Drive or Reverse if:

  • Driver's door is closed
  • Seat belt is buckled
  • Brake pedal is pressed
  • All doors and trunks are closed
  • Overhead console selector is not activated
  • Cameras are unobstructed

To override, press the brake and use the touchscreen drive mode strip. Confirm the selection before pressing the accelerator.

WARNING: Always confirm the drive mode selection before driving. Do not rely solely on automatic selection. Auto Shift from Park does not operate in Valet Mode.

Shift Using the Overhead Console

Use P, R, N, D buttons on the overhead console. LEDs indicate the selected gear. If touchscreen is unavailable, or Cybertruck is in Valet or Tow Mode, the console selector activates automatically.

Note: Activate the selector manually by briefly pressing both steering wheel scroll buttons simultaneously. Do not hold both buttons to avoid touchscreen restart.

  1. Park
  2. Reverse
  3. Neutral
  4. Drive

Park

Manually shift into Park by pressing the brake and touching Park on the drive mode strip. If touchscreen is unavailable, use the overhead console Park button. Cybertruck automatically shifts to Park to prevent roll-away in low speeds when connecting a charge cable, unbuckling seat belt, or opening a door.

WARNING: Always ensure the vehicle is in Park before exiting. Never rely on automatic shifting.
CAUTION: Cybertruck will not shift from Park if a charge cable is plugged in or the charge port cannot detect it. Follow touchscreen instructions if unable to shift.

Drive

Swipe up on the drive mode strip or press D on the overhead console. Shift into Drive when stopped or moving less than 5 mph (8 km/h) in Reverse.

Reverse

Swipe down on the drive mode strip or press R on the overhead console. Shift into Reverse when stopped or moving less than 5 mph (8 km/h) in Drive.

Neutral

Neutral allows Cybertruck to roll freely when not pressing the brake. Shift into Neutral by:

  • Open Controls and press/hold the Neutral icon
  • Choose Neutral from overhead console

Note: Press the brake to shift out of Neutral if moving slower than 5 mph (8 km/h). Cybertruck automatically shifts into Park when opening the driver's door unless in Tow or Car Wash Mode.

Keeping Your Vehicle in Neutral (Tow Mode)

To keep Cybertruck in Neutral when exiting:

  1. Shift into Park
  2. Press the brake pedal
  3. Touch Controls > Service > Towing
  4. Touch Enter Tow Mode. Cybertruck can now roll slowly or be winched.

Note: Tow Mode prevents automatic shifting into a drive mode. Exit Tow Mode to resume normal shifting.
