Tesla Cybertruck 2025-2026 Releasing a Seat Belt

Releasing a Seat Belt

Hold the belt near the buckle to prevent the belt from retracting too quickly, then press the button on the buckle. The belt retracts automatically. Ensure nothing prevents the belt from fully retracting. The belt should not hang loose. If a seat belt does not fully retract, schedule a service appointment.

Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR)

All passenger seat belts include an Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) that allows the seat belt to lock in place. This feature is commonly used to secure a child safety seat installed with the vehicle’s seat belt.

To engage the locking retractor:

  1. Fully extract the seat belt webbing beyond the length normally needed for an adult.
  2. Fasten the seat belt normally.
  3. Allow the belt to retract. You will hear a clicking sound as the ALR mechanism winds in slack and prevents the belt from extending.

The automatic locking retractor disengages when you unbuckle the seat belt and allow it to fully retract. After that, the belt operates normally and locks only during sudden stops or impacts.

WARNING: Do not use the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) feature for booster seats where the child is restrained directly by the vehicle’s seat belt instead of an integrated child safety seat harness.

Wearing Seat Belts When Pregnant

Do not place the lap or shoulder sections of the seat belt over the abdomen. Wear the lap belt as low as possible across the hips, not the waist. Position the shoulder belt between the breasts and to the side of the abdomen.

Consult your doctor for specific recommendations regarding seat belt use during pregnancy.

WARNING: If the seat belt feels uncomfortable, adjust your seating position rather than wearing the seat belt incorrectly.
WARNING: Never place anything between your body and the seat belt to cushion the impact in the event of a collision.

Seat Belt Pre-tensioners

Front seat belts are equipped with pre-tensioners that operate together with the airbags during a collision. The pre-tensioners automatically retract the seat belt lower anchor and the upper shoulder webbing, reducing slack in the belt and limiting the forward movement of the occupant.

Seat belts in all rear seating positions also include shoulder pre-tensioners that retract the webbing to reduce occupant movement.

If the pre-tensioners or airbags do not activate during an impact, this does not necessarily indicate a malfunction. The force of the impact may not have been sufficient to trigger deployment.

WARNING: Do not bend, sit on, or interfere with the pre-tensioner assembly. This can damage the seat belt system and interfere with its proper function.
WARNING: Once seat belt pre-tensioners have been activated, they must be replaced. After any collision, have the airbags and seat belt systems inspected and replaced if necessary.

Testing Seat Belts

To ensure seat belts function correctly, perform the following checks on each seat belt:

  1. Fasten the seat belt and pull sharply on the webbing near the buckle. The buckle should remain securely locked.
  2. Fasten the seat belt and pull sharply on the webbing near the door side. The attachment point should remain secure. Do not attempt to remove this attachment.
  3. Unfasten the belt and fully extend the webbing. Ensure it unreels smoothly and inspect it for wear or damage. Allow it to retract and confirm smooth and complete retraction.
  4. With the webbing partially extended, hold the latch plate and pull forward quickly. The mechanism should lock and prevent further extension.

If any seat belt fails these tests, have the vehicle serviced before using that seat.

Seat Belt Warnings

  • Seat belts must be worn by all occupants at all times, even for short trips.
  • Secure small children in a suitable child safety seat according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Ensure seat belts are worn correctly to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Never sit on any seat belt component.
  • Do not wear seat belts over hard or sharp items such as keys, pens, or eyeglasses.
  • Seat belts must not be twisted.
  • Each seat belt must be used by only one occupant.
  • Seat belts worn during a collision must be inspected and replaced if necessary.
  • Seat belts that are worn, frayed, cut, or damaged must be replaced.
  • Avoid contaminating seat belt components with chemicals, liquids, dirt, or cleaning products.
  • Do not modify seat belt mechanisms or add accessories that affect their operation.
  • Do not use third-party accessories attached to seat belts.
  • Seat belts should fully retract when not in use.
  • The seat belt system contains components that should not be disassembled or serviced by users.

Passenger Front Airbag Must Be OFF

Seat belts are designed for adults and larger children. Infants and small children must always be seated in the rear seats and secured in a suitable child safety seat appropriate for their age, weight, and size.

WARNING: Never seat a child in the front passenger seat, even when using a child restraint system.
WARNING: Never seat a child in front of an active airbag. Serious injury or death can occur if the airbag deploys.

The vehicle includes an occupancy sensor that controls the passenger front airbag status. Before driving with a child seat in the front passenger seat (where permitted), always confirm that the passenger airbag is turned off.

When the airbag is off, the Passenger Airbag OFF indicator appears on the touchscreen. This indicator may also appear when the seat is unoccupied.

When a passenger is detected in the front seat, the airbag turns on and the Passenger Airbag OFF indicator disappears. In this condition, the airbag will deploy during a collision.

WARNING: The driver is responsible for confirming that the passenger front airbag is OFF when a child is seated in the front passenger seat. If the airbag does not turn off, move the child seat to the rear seat and schedule a service appointment.
WARNING: Always ensure all seats are locked in position before driving.
WARNING: Do not associate the Easy Entry setting with the driver profile when a child is seated in the rear seat, as seat movement could cause injury.
