Tesla Cybertruck 2025-2026 Location of Airbags

Location of Airbags

Airbags are located in the approximate areas shown below. Airbag warning information is printed on the sun visors. Cybertruck is equipped with an airbag and lap/shoulder belt at both designated front seating positions. The airbag is a supplemental restraint at those seating positions. All occupants, including the driver, should always wear their seat belts whether or not an airbag is provided to minimize the risk of severe injury or death in a crash.

How Airbags Work

Airbags inflate when sensors detect an impact exceeding deployment thresholds. These thresholds predict crash severity to protect occupants. Airbags inflate instantly with considerable force and a loud noise. Together with seat belts, they limit occupant movement to reduce injury risk.

Front airbags may not inflate in rear collisions, rollovers, side impacts, heavy braking, or minor frontal collisions. Vehicle damage does not always indicate airbag deployment.

WARNING: Before modifying your vehicle to accommodate a person with disabilities in a way that may affect the airbag system, schedule a service appointment.

Types of Airbags

  • Front airbags: Reduce injuries for larger children or adults in front seats. Follow warnings related to seating a child in the front passenger seat.
  • Knee airbags: Limit forward motion of front seat occupants by restricting leg movement and improving front airbag effectiveness.
  • Seat-mounted airbags: Protect the pelvis, thorax, and head in the event of a severe side impact or offset frontal impact.
  • Curtain airbags: Protect the head. Inflate only during severe side impacts or rollovers.

Airbag Status Indicator

The passenger front airbag status displays on the touchscreen. The Passenger Airbag Off indicator appears when the airbag is OFF or the seat is unoccupied. Ensure the airbag is OFF when using a child seat in the front passenger seat.

To protect an adult in the front passenger seat, ensure the airbag is ON. The Passenger Airbag OFF icon should not be visible on the touchscreen when ON.

At the start of each drive, the airbag indicator briefly checks the following: airbags, seat belts with pre-tensioners, impact sensors, occupant sensors, seat belt sensors, passive safety wiring harnesses, and onboard restraint components. If a fault is detected, the warning indicator stays on; contact Tesla service immediately.

Front Passenger Occupant Detection

Cybertruck has an occupancy sensor controlling the front airbag. The Occupant Classification System (OCS) automatically detects when inflating the front airbag is unnecessary or potentially harmful.

WARNING: Seating an infant in a rear-facing child restraint on a seat with an active airbag can cause serious injury or death.
Object Classification (OCS) Passenger Airbag Status Notes
EmptyOFF
ObjectOFF or ONDepends on material/contents
Rear-facing child restraint (up to 1 yr old)OFFLess than 22 lbs (10 kg)
Forward-facing child restraintOFFLess than 35 lbs (16 kg)
Child in booster seatOFFLess than 51 lbs (23 kg)
Large childOFF or ON51–103 lbs (23–47 kg)
5th percentile female or larger (by weight)ONOver approximately 103 lbs (47 kg)

Note: If the passenger airbag status does not match the actual situation, do not use the seat. Use the mobile app to schedule a service appointment. It takes ~6 seconds after powering on Cybertruck for the OCS to report accurate airbag status.

To ensure correct occupancy detection, remove heavy objects from the seat, avoid cargo interfering with the seat, and remove aftermarket items attached to the headliner. If the status is still incorrect, ask passengers to ride in the rear seats and schedule a service appointment.
