Tesla Cybertruck 2025-2026 Opening and Closing Doors from Outside

Opening and Closing Doors from Outside

Doors are electrically powered. When you approach the vehicle carrying a phone key, the doors and tailgate automatically unlock. To open a door, press the exterior door release button on the pillar to the right of each door. You can also open a door using the Tesla mobile app.

The doors do not automatically lock or unlock when you approach carrying only a key card. In this case, you must manually lock or unlock the vehicle.

WARNING: Use caution around the panel edges on the vehicle, including the doors, powered frunk, tailgate, and surrounding panels.
WARNING: When pulling the door open, always grasp the door at the top. Keep hands and fingers away from the opening edge and supervise children when they open or close the doors. Improper handling of the front and rear doors may result in injury.
CAUTION: Slamming or forcing closures (including doors, tailgate, or powered frunk) can result in damage not covered under warranty.

Whenever a door is open, the Door Open indicator appears on the touchscreen. The vehicle image on the Controls window also visually shows which doors are open.

To close a door from outside, manually push it shut. Ensure that no objects are obstructing the door before closing.

Opening Doors from the Interior

To open a door while seated inside, press the interior door open button located at the top of the interior door handle and push the door open.

NOTE: To prevent children from opening the rear doors, enable child locks.

NOTE: If the vehicle has no low-voltage power, the interior door open button will not function.

Interior Locking and Unlocking

While seated inside the vehicle, you can lock or unlock all doors, the tailgate, and the powered frunk by touching the lock icon on the touchscreen.

The icon changes to indicate whether the doors are locked or unlocked.

When the vehicle is stopped and placed in Park, you can choose to automatically unlock all doors by enabling:

Controls > Locks > Unlock on Park

The vehicle automatically locks all doors (including the powered frunk and tailgate) when the driving speed exceeds 5 mph (8 km/h). If the tailgate remains open after the vehicle locks, a message appears on the touchscreen.

If a phone is set up as a key, the vehicle cannot determine whether the phone is inside or outside the vehicle. If you want the doors to remain locked while you are inside, close all doors and use the lock icon on the touchscreen.

Walk-Away Door Lock

The doors, tailgate, and powered frunk can automatically lock when you walk away carrying your phone key.

To enable or disable this feature, go to:

Controls > Locks > Walk-Away Door Lock

NOTE: Apple Watch keys also support Walk-Away Lock.

When the vehicle locks, the exterior lights flash once. To enable a confirmation sound when locking, go to:

Controls > Locks > Lock Confirmation Sound

The vehicle does not automatically lock if:

  • The Exclude Home option is enabled and the vehicle is parked at your Home location.
  • A key (phone or key card) is detected inside the vehicle.
  • A door or the powered frunk is not fully closed.
  • The phone key’s Bluetooth cannot communicate with the vehicle.
  • The phone battery is depleted.
  • The driver exits the vehicle without using the driver’s door.

If the vehicle detects a phone key for several minutes after the driver exits, Walk-Away Lock disables and the doors must be locked manually using a key card until the next drive.

NOTE: It is your responsibility to ensure the vehicle is locked, even if Walk-Away Door Lock is enabled.

Driver Door Unlock Mode

When Driver Door Unlock Mode is enabled, only the driver's door unlocks when the vehicle is first unlocked.

To unlock the remaining doors, long press the interior door open button or use the touchscreen or mobile app.

When Driver Door Unlock Mode is disabled, unlocking the vehicle unlocks all doors, the powered frunk, and the tailgate.

You can receive a notification if a door, powered frunk, window, or the vehicle itself is left open or unlocked unexpectedly.

Enable this feature by selecting:

Controls > Locks > Car Left Open Notifications

Windows

CAUTION: Windows automatically lower slightly when a door opens or closes. This prevents damage to the window. If you manually raise a window while the door is open, ensure it lowers slightly before closing the door.

Press down on a window switch to lower the window. Window switches operate at two levels:

  • Press fully and release to lower the window completely.
  • Press gently and release to stop at a desired position.

Pull the switch upward to raise the window:

  • Pull fully and release to raise the window completely.
  • Pull gently and release to stop at a desired position.

NOTE: If a window is fully lowered and you open the door, it raises slightly. If you want it completely lowered while the door is open, press the switch again.

If a window is left open unintentionally, the vehicle can send a notification to the mobile app if the following feature is enabled:

Controls > Locks > Car Left Open Notification > Doors & Windows

To automatically close windows when the vehicle locks, enable:

Controls > Locks > Close Windows on Lock

WARNING: Always ensure that passengers, especially children, keep hands and body parts clear of the window opening when closing windows.
WARNING: Never leave children unattended inside the vehicle.

Locking Rear Windows

To disable the rear window switches, enable:

Controls > Locks > Window Lock

When enabled, rear windows can only be controlled from the driver’s window switch.

WARNING: Lock rear window switches when children are seated in the rear seats.

  1. Close the door with the affected window.
  2. Pull the window switch up to fully raise the window and hold for several seconds.
  3. Press the switch down to fully lower the window and hold for several seconds.
