Side Assist

Applies to: vehicles with side assist

General Information

Side assist monitors the blind spot and traffic behind your vehicle and provides assistance when changing lanes. If the system detects an approaching object and classifies it as critical, the display in the exterior mirror on that side of the vehicle will turn on.

Driving Situations

The side assist warning is active at speeds above approximately 9 mph (15 km/h) and can help in situations such as:

  • Your vehicle is being passed. The faster another vehicle approaches from behind, the sooner the display in the exterior mirror will turn on.
  • Vehicles are traveling in the same direction in a lane adjacent to yours. The display turns on when the object enters the blind spot.
  • You are slowly passing another vehicle. If the speed difference is less than 9 mph (15 km/h), the display will turn on.

Information Stage

As long as no turn signal is activated, the system informs you about critical objects by illuminating the display in the respective exterior mirror.

The display remains dim during the information stage so that you are not distracted while looking ahead.

Warning Stage

Once you activate a turn signal, the system warns you about critical objects by illuminating the display in the exterior mirror.

If other driver assistance systems detect that your vehicle is about to leave the lane, the display will blink even if the turn signal is not activated. Corrective steering may also occur.

System Limitations

The system uses radar sensors at the rear corners of the vehicle to detect adjacent lanes. In some situations, the system may react even if there is no vehicle in the critical area.

These situations may include:

  • Driving on the edge of your own lane
  • Narrow lanes
  • Curves
  • High barriers on the side of the road

Warning

  • Observe the safety precautions and limits of the assist systems, sensors, and cameras.
  • The display may not appear in time when vehicles approach very quickly.
  • If the window glass in the driver or passenger door is tinted, the exterior mirror display may be incorrect.
  • Sensor coverage areas are diagrams only and do not represent true-to-scale ranges.
  • The system complies with United States FCC and ISED regulations.

Settings

Applies to: vehicles with side assist

You can turn side assist on or off, or adjust it to your preference.

MMI path:

VEHICLE > Driver assistance > Side assist

Brightness

Change the brightness only when side assist is switched on so the setting can be checked in the exterior mirror displays.

Adjust the brightness so the information stage display does not disrupt your view ahead. The brightness automatically adapts to ambient light.

Tips

  • When the system is switched on, the mirror displays briefly turn on after ignition.
  • Switching side assist on or off will also switch the exit warning on or off.
  • Certain settings are stored and assigned to the remote control key being used.

Messages

Applies to: vehicles with side assist

If a malfunction is displayed, side assist and exit warning functions may be unavailable or limited.

Weather conditions may be poor or a sensor may be covered. Clean the sensor areas at the rear corners of the vehicle and try again later.

If the malfunction remains, visit an authorized Audi dealer or service facility immediately.

Exit Warning

Applies to: vehicles with exit warning system

General Information

Within system limits, the exit warning system can detect traffic approaching from behind and assist you when exiting the vehicle.

The system uses radar sensors at the rear corners of the vehicle.

Displays and Warnings

If a door is opened while the vehicle is stationary and a road user is detected in a critical situation, the warning strip on the door and the exterior mirror display will blink.

If a critical road user approaches while a door is already open, the displays on that door will turn on.
