Checking and Filling
Fuel
Types of Gasoline
The correct gasoline grade is stated on the inside of the fuel filler door. The vehicle is equipped with a catalytic converter and must only be driven with unleaded gasoline.
Audi recommends using TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline. For more info, visit www.toptiergas.com.
Gasoline grades are differentiated by octane ratings ((R+M)/2 = AKI, or RON). Examples from fuel filler door:
- Regular: UNLEADED FUEL ONLY, MIN. (R+M)/2 87, MIN. RON 91. Use regular gasoline if premium is not available. Slight reduction in engine power.
- Premium: UNLEADED FUEL ONLY, MIN. (R+M)/2 91 / SUPER MIN. RON 95. Recommended for rated horsepower and torque.
- Premium Plus: UNLEADED FUEL ONLY, MIN. (R+M)/2 93 / SUPER PLUS MIN. RON 98. If unavailable, use premium 91 AKI / 95 RON. Slight reduction in engine power.
Note
- Filling tank even once with leaded fuel or metallic additives permanently damages the catalytic converter.
- Using gasoline with too low octane at high speeds or heavy load can damage engine.
Tips
- Vehicle may be filled with fuel of higher octane than required.
Gasoline Mixture
Gasoline with Alcohol (Ethanol)
Unleaded gasoline with up to 15% ethanol (E15) can be used.
Gasoline Adapted to Season
Seasonally adapted fuels are recommended. Refuel at high-traffic gas stations when season changes.
Note
- Do not use gasoline that does not meet specifications.
- Do not use ethanol fuels > E15 (e.g., E30–E100).
- Do not use methanol fuels > M5 (e.g., M100), engine and fuel system will be damaged.
- Ask gas station operator if unsure about gasoline mixture.
- Do not use unidentified gasoline mixtures; Audi is not responsible for damage or performance issues.
Gasoline Additives
Combustion residues may accumulate depending on fuel used. Use only approved TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline. Long-term use of incorrect fuels may impair engine performance.
Note
- Damage or malfunctions from incorrect fuel are not covered by New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Only Audi-approved gasoline additives may be used.
Refueling Messages
If the Ay indicator appears with a message, refuel immediately.
- Ay Tank system: malfunction! Contact authorized Audi dealer or Service Facility immediately.
Fueling Procedure
- Fuel filler door unlocked/locked by central locking system. Unlock vehicle if necessary.
- Press left side of fuel filler door to open.
- Unscrew fuel cap counterclockwise; place on open door.
- Insert fuel pump nozzle fully into filler neck; begin fueling.
- When nozzle shuts off first time, tank is full; do not continue.
- Wait 5 seconds after nozzle shuts off before removing.
- Turn fuel cap clockwise until it clicks; close fuel filler door until latched.
- Check label inside fuel filler door for correct fuel type.
- Refer to Technical Data (page 289) for tank capacity.
Warning
- Improper fueling can cause explosions, fires, burns, and injuries.
- No smoking; keep away from flames.
- Ignition must be off; mobile devices and radios off.
- Insert fuel nozzle fully to prevent leaks; spilled fuel can ignite.
- Never enter vehicle while refueling. If needed, touch metal surface before touching nozzle to prevent sparks.
