Audi A4

Rear Cross-Traffic Assist

Applies to: vehicles with rear cross-traffic assist

General Information

The rear cross-traffic assist monitors the area behind and next to the vehicle using radar sensors at the rear corners of the vehicle.

The system can detect approaching moving objects, such as vehicles. A display in the MMI and various warnings assist the driver when exiting a parking space.

Requirements for Using Rear Cross-Traffic Assist

  • The parking aid is switched on or reverse gear is selected.
  • The speed when driving in reverse must not exceed approximately 9 mph (15 km/h).

Displays, Warnings, and Braking

Display

The display appears only when the parking aid is active. On vehicles with peripheral cameras, the display appears only in the Rear and Rear corner camera views.

Arrows indicate the direction from which cross traffic is approaching.

Audible Warnings

An audio warning signal may sound as an additional warning when driving in reverse.

Automatic Brake Activation

If the driver does not react to a warning, the system may briefly apply the brakes to warn of a possible collision with an approaching object.

Audible warnings and automatic braking occur only when driving in reverse.

Switching Rear Cross-Traffic Assist On and Off

MMI path:

  • VEHICLE > Parking aid > Rear cross-traffic assist
  • Or select Rear cross-traffic assist in the center display when the parking system is active

Messages

If a warning symbol appears, the rear cross-traffic assist functions may be unavailable or limited.

A message explaining the cause and possible solution may appear. Weather conditions may be poor or sensors may be covered.

Clean the sensor areas at the rear corners of the vehicle and try activating the system again later.

If the malfunction remains, drive to an authorized Audi dealer or Audi Service Facility immediately.

Warning

  • Always observe the safety precautions and system limits.
  • The system does not detect people and cannot warn of all objects, such as cyclists.
  • Always monitor traffic and surroundings with direct eye contact.
  • The system may not react or may react too late to fast-approaching objects.
  • The system does not provide warnings if the vehicle is parked parallel, diagonally, or too far into the parking space.
  • After automatic braking, the system cannot trigger another brake intervention for several seconds.
  • The system may be unavailable if ESC is limited or switched off, or if there is a system malfunction.
  • If an audible warning is active, parking aid audio warnings may be limited.
  • Sensor coverage areas are diagrams and not true-to-scale.
