Audi A4

Battery

General Information

Due to the complex power supply, all work on batteries such as disconnecting or replacing should only be performed by an authorized Audi dealer or authorized Audi Service Facility.

Multiple batteries with different technologies may be installed in your vehicle:

Not Running the Vehicle for Long Periods

If the vehicle is not used for long periods, the battery will gradually drain. To ensure the vehicle can start, electrical equipment may be limited or switched off. Some convenience functions such as interior lighting or power seat adjustment may not be available until the engine is started.

Even when switched off, some equipment can drain the battery. Deep discharging causes chemical reactions that damage the battery. Charge the battery every month to prevent damage. Contact an authorized Audi dealer or Service Facility for more information (see page 235).

Winter Operation

Cold weather places a high load on the 12-volt vehicle battery, reducing starting ability. Have the battery checked by an authorized Audi dealer or Service Facility before cold weather begins.

Replacing the Battery

All work on the 12-volt vehicle battery must only be performed by an authorized Audi dealer or Service Facility.

The battery is developed based on installation location and equipped with safety features. For replacement, ask the dealer about electromagnetic compatibility, size, maintenance, power, and safety standards.

  • The battery vent must always be on the negative terminal side; the positive side vent must be closed.
  • Only use a maintenance-free 12-volt battery meeting TL 825 06 and VW 7 50 73 standards (October 2014 or newer).

Warning

  • All work on battery or electrical system can cause injuries, chemical burns, or accidents. Only authorized Audi personnel should perform this work.
  • Battery replacement requires adaptation to the vehicle electrical system, which only an authorized dealer or Service Facility can perform correctly. Otherwise, safety-related functions may be lost.
  • For vehicles with jump start connections: never connect the charging or jump start cable directly to the 12-volt battery; use designated connections in the engine compartment (see page 235).

California Proposition 65 Warning

Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.

Notes

  • If the vehicle will be parked for long periods, protect the battery against cold to prevent freezing (see page 235, Charging the 12-volt vehicle battery).
  • Electrical components under the cargo floor may warm during operation. Avoid storing objects like blankets under the cargo floor to prevent overheating. Temporary shutdown will be indicated in the instrument cluster.
  • Always have an authorized dealer replace the battery and perform necessary adaptation to the electrical system.
  • Using unsuitable batteries may void the vehicle’s operating license.

Environmental Advice

Batteries must be disposed of using methods that do not harm the environment. Do not dispose of batteries in household trash. They contain harmful substances and recyclable materials. Contact an authorized Audi dealer or Service Facility for disposal information.
