SRS Airbag (Supplemental Restraint System Airbag)

SRS stands for Supplemental Restraint System. This name is used because the airbag system supplements the vehicle’s seatbelts.

Your vehicle is equipped with a supplemental restraint system in addition to lap/shoulder belts at each front seating position and each rear window-side seating position.

The SRS system consists of seven airbags configured as follows:

  • Driver’s and front passenger’s frontal airbags
  • Driver’s and front passenger’s side airbags
  • Curtain airbags (for driver, front passenger, and window-side rear passengers)
  • Knee airbag for the driver

These SRS airbags are designed only as a supplement to the primary protection provided by seatbelts.

The system also controls the front seatbelt pretensioners. For operation instructions and precautions regarding the seatbelt pretensioner, refer to the section on front seatbelt pretensioners.

General Precautions Regarding SRS Airbag System

WARNING
  • To obtain maximum protection in an accident, the driver and all passengers must always wear seatbelts. The SRS airbag is only a supplement to the protection provided by seatbelts.
  • Not wearing a seatbelt increases the chance of severe injury or death in a crash even when the vehicle is equipped with SRS airbags.
  • The SRS side airbags and curtain airbags are also designed as supplemental protection and do not eliminate the need to wear seatbelts.
  • Occupants should sit upright and properly positioned to reduce the risk of injury.
WARNING

SRS airbags deploy with considerable speed and force. Occupants who are not in the proper seating position when the airbags deploy could suffer serious injuries.

The driver should sit upright and as far back from the steering wheel as practical while maintaining full control of the vehicle. The front passenger should move the seat as far back as possible and sit upright.

WARNING
  • Do not sit or lean unnecessarily close to the front doors. SRS side airbags are stored in the seatbacks and deploy rapidly during a side impact or frontal collision.
  • Do not lean close to the front or rear doors or place your head, arms, or hands outside the window because curtain airbags deploy from the roof side area.
  • Do not sit or lean too close to any SRS airbag. The deployment force could cause injuries if your body is too close.
  • Even when properly positioned, minor injuries such as abrasions or bruises may occur due to the force of airbag deployment.
WARNING
  • Do not rest your arm on either front door or its internal trim because injury could occur during side airbag deployment.
  • Do not place objects over or near the SRS airbag cover or between you and the airbag.
  • If the airbag deploys, these objects may interfere with proper operation or be propelled inside the vehicle causing injury.
WARNING
  • Do not place objects on the steering wheel pad or dashboard.
  • Do not place objects under the driver’s side instrument panel.
  • If the SRS frontal or knee airbag deploys, such objects may interfere with operation and could be thrown inside the vehicle causing injury.
  • Do not attach heavy, sharp, or hard accessories to the key because they may cause injury if the knee airbag deploys.
