Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Exhaust System and Catalytic Converter

Exhaust System and Catalytic Converter

If exhaust fumes are entering the vehicle, have the problem checked and corrected as soon as possible. If you must drive under these conditions, drive only with all windows fully open.

  • Keep the rear gate closed while driving to prevent exhaust gas from entering the vehicle.

Note: Due to the expansion and contraction of metals in the exhaust system, a crackling sound may be heard briefly after engine shutdown. This is normal.

Catalytic Converter

The catalytic converter is installed in the exhaust system to reduce HC, CO, and NOx in exhaust gases for cleaner emissions.

To avoid damage:

  • Use only unleaded fuel.
  • Never start the engine by pushing or pulling the vehicle.
  • Avoid racing the engine.
  • Do not turn the ignition to “OFF” while the vehicle is moving.
  • Keep the engine tuned. Repair rough running or misfiring promptly at a SUBARU dealer.
  • Do not apply undercoating or rust treatment to the catalytic converter or exhaust system heat shield.
  • Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level.

Warning:

  • Avoid fire hazards; do not park near flammable materials as the catalytic converter operates at high temperatures.
  • Keep everyone and flammable materials away from the exhaust pipe; exhaust gases are very hot.

Periodic Inspections

Perform all recommended maintenance listed in the “Warranty and Maintenance Booklet” at specified time or mileage intervals to keep your vehicle in optimal condition.

Driving in Foreign Countries

  • Confirm availability of correct fuel.
  • Comply with local regulations and requirements.

Driving Tips for AWD Models

Warning: Always maintain a safe driving speed according to road and weather conditions. Overconfidence in AWD vehicles can lead to serious accidents.

When replacing tires, all four tires must match in:

  • Size
  • Circumference
  • Speed symbol
  • Load index
  • Construction
  • Manufacturer
  • Brand / tread pattern
  • Degree of wear

Incorrect tires may cause mechanical damage or loss of vehicle control.

AWD provides better traction on slippery or uneven roads and distributes power between front and rear wheels for acceleration and engine braking.

  • Check cold tire pressure before driving.
  • Frequent hard driving may require earlier replacement of engine oil, brake fluid, differential oils, transmission fluids.
  • Observe precautions when towing (see “Towing” F9-13).

On–Road and Off–Road Driving

Warning:

  • Always fasten seatbelts to minimize risk of injury or death in rollover crashes.
  • Avoid sharp turns or quick maneuvers.
  • Maintain safe speed and distance in crosswinds.
  • Be aware that utility vehicles have higher center of gravity and may roll over more easily.

Off-Road Precautions:

  • Wear seatbelts and carry emergency equipment (towing rope, shovel, wheel blocks, first aid kit, phone/radio).
  • Drive slowly and avoid unnecessary risks.
  • Drive straight up/down steep slopes; avoid sharp turning on slopes.
  • Drive with fingers/thumbs on outside of steering rim.
  • Check water depth before crossing streams; avoid rushing water.
  • Check brakes after driving in sand, mud, or water.
  • Avoid parking over flammable materials.
  • Clear underbody from debris after off-road use.
  • Secure cargo inside the vehicle; do not pile heavy loads on the roof.
  • Rock vehicle gently to free from sand/mud; avoid spinning wheels.
  • Use 2nd gear for better traction on slippery surfaces if needed.
  • Do not equip tires larger than specified; wash underbody after off-road driving.

Winter Driving

Operation During Cold Weather

  • Carry emergency equipment (window scraper, sand, flares, shovel, jumper cables).
  • Check battery and cables; use appropriate engine oil for cold weather.
  • Prevent frozen door locks; remove ice using hot water and wipe dry.
  • Use windshield washer fluid with antifreeze; check concentration vs outside temperature.

Before Driving

  • Remove snow/ice from shoes to prevent slippery pedals.
  • Ensure pedals and controls operate smoothly.
  • Clear snow/ice under fenders periodically.

Parking in Cold Weather

  • Do not use parking brake for long periods in freezing conditions.
  • For MT: place shift lever in “1” or “R”. For CVT: select lever in “P”.
  • Use tire stops to prevent vehicle movement.
  • Raise wiper blades off glass when parked in snow.
  • Check brakes for snow/ice buildup after parking in snowy conditions.

Refueling in Cold Weather

Use an antifreeze additive in the fuel tank to prevent moisture formation and freezing. Refill when fuel reaches half-empty for maximum effect. Fill tank to capacity if vehicle will be unused for a long time.

Power Rear Gate (Models with Power Rear Gate)

CAUTION: Before operating, check for frost or snow between the gate and body.
