Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Fuel Filler Lid and Cap
Fuel Filler Lid and Cap
Refueling: Only one person should refuel at a time. Do not allow others near the fuel filler pipe. Follow service station precautions.
- Pull the fuel filler lid release lever up (located on the floor to the left of the driver’s seat).
WARNING: Before opening the fuel filler cap, discharge static electricity by touching the vehicle body or a metal portion of the fuel pump. Avoid re-entering the vehicle during refueling to prevent sparks.
- Remove the fuel filler cap by turning it slowly counterclockwise.
WARNING: Gasoline vapor is highly flammable. Always stop the engine, close doors/windows, and avoid open flames or sparks. Wipe up any spilled fuel immediately.
Turn the cap slowly to the left; do not remove quickly. If hissing occurs, wait for it to stop to avoid spraying fuel.
- Place the fuel filler cap on the cap holder inside the lid.
- Stop filling when the fuel pump automatically stops.
- Replace the cap, turning clockwise until it clicks, ensuring the tether is not caught.
- Close the fuel filler lid completely.
NOTE:
- The fuel gauge displays the “→†sign, indicating the fuel filler door is on the right side.
- If the cap is not fully tightened, the CHECK ENGINE light may illuminate.
CAUTION: Never add cleaning agents to the fuel tank. Use only genuine SUBARU fuel filler caps. Avoid spilling fuel on exterior surfaces.
State Emission Testing (U.S. only)
WARNING: Never test AWD models on a two-wheel dynamometer. Serious transmission damage may occur.
CAUTION: Inform inspectors not to place SUBARU AWD vehicles on a two-wheel dynamometer. Damage from improper testing is not covered under warranty.
OBDII emission inspections are required in most states. Vehicles pass if the CHECK ENGINE light functions properly and no diagnostic trouble codes exist.
Preparing to Drive
Perform these checks daily before driving:
- Ensure windows, mirrors, and lights are clean and unobstructed.
- Check tire appearance, condition, and inflation.
- Inspect under the vehicle for leaks or small animals.
- Ensure hood and rear gate are fully closed.
- Adjust seats and mirrors.
- Fasten seatbelts and ensure passengers are buckled.
- Check warning and indicator lights with ignition “ONâ€.
- Check gauges after starting the engine.
CAUTION: Prevent small animals from entering the engine or under the vehicle to avoid malfunctions.
Starting and Stopping the Engine (Models without Push-Button Start)
Starting Engine: Do not operate starter motor continuously for more than 10 seconds. Allow 10 seconds before retrying if it fails to start. Battery disconnection may cause difficulty starting due to electronically controlled throttle self-diagnosis.
General Precautions: Never start the engine from outside. Avoid poor ventilation areas. Do not start near flammable materials. If engine stops during driving, catalyst may overheat.
MT Models
- Apply parking brake and turn off unnecessary lights/accessories.
- Depress clutch fully and shift into neutral.
- Turn ignition to “ON†and check warning lights.
- Turn ignition to “START†without pressing accelerator. Release key after engine starts.
- If engine fails to start, follow multi-step procedure using accelerator pedal and ignition.
- Confirm warning lights turn off; fuel injection system adjusts idle speed automatically.
CVT Models
- Apply parking brake and turn off unnecessary lights/accessories.
- Shift lever to “P†or “N†(preferably “Pâ€).
CAUTION: When restarting engine while moving, shift to “N†only. Never shift to “P†while moving.
Stopping the Engine
Turn ignition off only when vehicle is stopped and engine idling.
WARNING: Do not stop the engine while moving. Loss of power steering and brake booster can cause dangerous driving conditions.
