Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Starting and Stopping the Engine (Models with Push-Button Start System)

Starting and Stopping the Engine (Models with Push-Button Start System)

After the engine starts, the engine speed will be kept high until it has warmed up sufficiently.

  1. Operation indicator
  2. Push-button ignition switch

To start the engine:

  1. Carry the access key and sit in the driver’s seat.
  2. Apply the parking brake.
  3. Shift the select lever to “P” (or “N” for emergency starting).
  4. Depress the brake pedal until the operation indicator turns green. Note: When in “N”, the indicator may not turn green.
  5. While holding the brake, press the push-button ignition switch.

NOTE:

  • If the engine does not start normally, move the lever to “P”, switch to “ACC”, depress the brake, and hold the push-button for at least 15 seconds.
  • If the brake pedal feels stiff, press more firmly to ensure the indicator turns green.

Stopping the Engine

  1. Stop the vehicle completely.
  2. Move the select lever to “P”.
  3. Press the push-button ignition switch; the engine will stop and power will be off.

WARNING: Do not touch the push-button while driving. Pressing and holding for ≥3 seconds, or pressing 3+ times quickly, will stop the engine, disable brake booster and power steering, increasing accident risk. If engine stops during driving, do not operate the switch or open doors until safe.

CAUTION: Never stop the engine while the select lever is not in “P”, as power will be in “ACC” and the battery may discharge.

Refer to “Access key – if access key does not operate properly” F9-17 for access key issues.

Remote Engine Start System (Dealer Option)

WARNING: Do not remote start in enclosed spaces due to Carbon Monoxide risk. Place system in service mode before servicing.

The remote engine start allows starting the engine from outside the vehicle, and can activate heater or air conditioner.

Models with Keyless Access & Push-Button Start

  1. Carry access key.
  2. Confirm select lever in “P”, all doors and hood closed, push-button in “OFF”.
  3. Press the lock button twice within 2 seconds, then press and hold for 3 seconds to start the engine.
  4. Press and hold the lock button to stop the engine.

Automatic Engine Shutdown: Engine will not start or will shut down if total run-time >20 min, any door/hood opened, lever not in “P”, push-button pressed, brake pedal depressed, or engine speed >3,000 rpm. Settings can be changed via SUBARU dealer.

Models without Keyless Access

Use the remote engine starter transceiver (fob):

  1. Ensure all doors and hood closed.
  2. Press the fob button twice within 3 seconds. If in range, fob flashes/beeps once, horn sounds once, lights flash once. Engine starts within 5 seconds.
  3. While idling, side marker, tail, and parking lights remain on; fob flashes once every 3 seconds; power windows disabled.
  4. Press and hold the fob button ≥2 seconds to stop engine; fob flashes/beeps 3 times.

Safety Features: Remote start will prevent/start engine and sound horn twice if brake depressed, key in ignition, hood open, service mode engaged, engine >3,500 rpm, alarm triggered, or lever not in “P”. Doors open during operation triggers 6 horn sounds and light flash. Vehicle system may power down for safety risks.

NOTE: Alarm system remains in its armed/disarmed state during remote start cycle. Fob confirms system status via LED and buzzer.
