Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Examples of SRS Side and Curtain Airbag Deployment
Examples of SRS Side and Curtain Airbag Deployment
Accidents in which the SRS curtain airbag will most likely deploy:
- The vehicle is involved in a severe side impact near the front seat or the rear seat.
- The vehicle rolls onto its side or the roof.
- The angle of vehicle tip-up is marginal or the skidding vehicle’s tires hit a curbstone laterally.
- An offset frontal collision severe enough to deploy the front airbag.
Accidents in which the SRS side and curtain airbags may deploy:
- Hitting a curb, edge of pavement, or hard surface.
- Falling into or jumping over a deep hole.
- Landing hard or vehicle falling.
It is possible that the SRS side and curtain airbags will deploy if a serious impact occurs to the underside of your vehicle.
Accidents in which the SRS side airbag is unlikely to deploy:
- The vehicle is involved in an oblique side-on impact.
- The vehicle is involved in a side-on impact in an area outside the passenger compartment.
- The vehicle strikes a telephone pole or similar object.
- The vehicle is involved in a side-on impact from a motorcycle.
- The vehicle rolls onto its side or the roof.
Accidents in which the SRS curtain airbag is unlikely to deploy:
- The vehicle is involved in an oblique side-on impact.
- The vehicle is involved in a side-on impact in an area outside the passenger compartment.
- The vehicle strikes a telephone pole or similar object.
Accidents in which SRS side and curtain airbags are not designed to deploy:
- The vehicle is involved in a frontal collision with another vehicle (moving or stationary).
- The vehicle is struck from behind.
- The vehicle pitches end over end.
In an accident with multiple side impacts, SRS side and curtain airbags deploy only once on the first impact.
SRS Airbag System Monitoring
The SRS airbag system is continuously monitored while driving. The warning light indicates normal operation by illuminating for approximately 6 seconds when the ignition is turned to “ONâ€.
- Monitored components include:
- Front sub sensors (right and left-hand side)
- Airbag control module (including impact and rollover sensors)
- Frontal airbag modules (driver and passenger sides)
- Knee airbag module (driver’s side)
- Side airbag sensors (center pillar left and right)
- Front door impact sensors (left and right)
- Side airbag modules (driver and passenger sides)
- Curtain airbag sensors (rear wheel house left and right)
- Curtain airbag modules (left and right)
- Satellite safing sensor (under rear center seat)
- Seatbelt pretensioners (driver and passenger sides)
- Lap belt pretensioner (front passenger side)
- Seatbelt buckle switch (front passenger side)
- Front passenger occupant detection system sensor and control module
- Front passenger frontal airbag ON/OFF indicator
- All related wiring
WARNING: If the warning light flashes, fails to illuminate, stays on, or illuminates while driving, your SRS airbag and seatbelt pretensioners may malfunction. Immediately contact your nearest SUBARU dealer.
SRS Airbag System Servicing
WARNING: Do not attempt user servicing of the SRS airbag system. Tampering may cause accidental inflation or inoperative airbags, resulting in serious injury. Consult your SUBARU dealer for replacement or repair using genuine parts.
CAUTION: Have service performed by an authorized SUBARU dealer for areas containing airbag modules, impact sensors, and control modules, including:
- Center of the instrument panel
- Front sides of the vehicle
- Steering wheel, column, and nearby areas
- Dashboard top on front passenger side
- Front seats and nearby areas
- Center pillars and front doors
- Roof sides (front pillar to behind rear quarter glass)
- Between rear seat cushion and rear wheel house
- Under rear center seat
Replacement or repairs after deployment should be performed only by an authorized SUBARU dealer using genuine parts.
Precautions Against Vehicle Modification
WARNING: To avoid accidental activation or inoperability of the SRS system, do not modify any components or wiring. This includes:
- Custom steering wheels
- Additional trim materials on dashboard
- Custom seats or seat fabric/leather
- Additional fabric/leather on front seats
- Accessories attached to pillars, windshield, side windows, or cabin surfaces near deploying airbags
