Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Ignition Switch and Hazard Warning Flasher

Ignition Switch and Hazard Warning Flasher

Ignition Switch (Models without Push-Button Start System)

WARNING:

  • Never turn the ignition switch to “LOCK” while driving or towing; this locks the steering wheel, making steering difficult.
  • Before leaving the vehicle, remove the key and never leave an unattended child inside. Children could operate controls or move the vehicle.

CAUTION: Do not attach large key holders or cases. They can cause unwanted turning of the ignition switch due to bumps or centrifugal force.

The ignition switch has four positions: LOCK, ACC, ON, and START.

NOTE: Keep the switch in “LOCK” when engine is off. Using electrical accessories for long periods in “ON” or “ACC” may drain the battery. If stuck in “LOCK,” turn the steering wheel slightly while turning the key.

LOCK

The key can only be inserted or removed in this position. The steering wheel locks when key is removed. If difficult, turn the steering wheel slightly while turning the key. The key can only turn to LOCK if select lever is in “P” and key is pushed in (all models).

ACC

Electrical accessories (audio, power outlets, etc.) can be used.

ON

Normal operating position after engine start.

START

Cranks the engine to start. Key returns to “ON” after starting.

CAUTION: Do not turn to START while engine is running. If key fails, remove and reinsert, then try again. Engine may not start if key touches other keys, metallic holders, or other transmitters.

Key Reminder Chime

Sounds when driver’s door is opened and ignition is in LOCK or ACC. Stops when:

  • Ignition switched to ON
  • Key removed
  • Driver’s door closed

Push-Button Ignition Switch (Models with Push-Button Start System)

Ignition Switch Light (If Equipped)

Illuminates when driver’s door is opened or unlocked using remote keyless entry. Turns off gradually or immediately under specified conditions.

Safety Precautions

Refer to “Safety precautions” F2-10.

Operating Range

If access key is not detected within antenna range inside vehicle, push-button start cannot operate. Avoid leaving key in places where operation may fail (instrument panel, floor, glove box, door trim pocket, rear seat, cargo area corner). Replace access key battery if discharged.

Switching Power Status
  1. Carry access key, sit in driver’s seat.
  2. Shift select lever to “P”.
  3. Press push-button ignition without brake. Power cycles through OFF → ACC → ON → OFF. Indicator illuminates orange for ACC or ON.
Power Status Indicator Color Operation
OFF Power is turned off.
ACC Orange Audio and accessory power outlet can be used.
ON Orange (engine stopped) All electrical systems can be used.

CAUTION:

  • Leaving switch in ON or ACC long may drain battery.
  • Avoid spilling liquids or touching switch with oily hands.
  • If switch does not operate smoothly or illuminate, contact SUBARU dealer.
  • If switch heats in sun, avoid touching directly.

NOTE: Firmly press switch for operation. Rapid pressing may not change power. Green flashing indicates steering lock; turn wheel while pressing switch.

Hazard Warning Flasher

Used to warn others when parked under emergency. Works regardless of ignition position. Press button to activate; all turn signals flash. Press again to deactivate.

NOTE: Turn signals do not work when hazard flasher is on.
