Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Installing a Rearward Facing Child Restraint

Installing a Rearward Facing Child Restraint

  1. Place the child restraint system in the rear seating position.
  2. Run the lap and shoulder belt through or around the child restraint system following the instructions provided by its manufacturer.
  3. Insert the tongue plate into the buckle until you hear a click.
  4. Take up the slack in the lap belt.
  5. Pull the seatbelt fully from the retractor to switch it from the Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) to the Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) mode. Allow the belt to rewind into the retractor. Clicking sounds will indicate that the retractor is functioning in ALR mode.
  6. Push and pull the child restraint system forward and from side to side to ensure it is firmly secured. Sometimes the restraint can be tightened further by pushing it down into the seat cushion while tightening the seatbelt.
  7. Pull the shoulder portion of the belt to confirm that it cannot be pulled out, ensuring the ALR is functioning properly.
  8. To remove the child restraint system, press the release button on the seatbelt buckle and allow the belt to retract completely. The belt will return to ELR mode.
WARNING

Never install a forward or rearward facing child seat in the front passenger’s seat. Doing so risks serious injury or death to the child by placing the child’s head too close to the SRS airbag.

NOTE

When the child restraint system is no longer in use, remove it and restore the ELR function of the retractor by allowing the seatbelt to retract fully.

Installing a Forward Facing Child Restraint

WARNING

Before installing a child restraint system, confirm that the seatback is securely locked in place. Otherwise, serious injury or death may occur in an accident.

  1. Shake the seatback slightly to confirm that it is securely locked. If the seatback is locked, the red unlocking marker at the bottom of the lock release knob will not be visible.
  2. Remove the head restraint from the rear seat where the child restraint system will be installed.
CAUTION

Store the removed head restraint in the cargo area. Avoid placing it in the passenger compartment where it may become a projectile during sudden stops or turns.

  1. For models with rear seat reclining mechanisms, adjust the seatback to the upright position.
  2. Place the child restraint system in the rear seating position.
WARNING

If the child restraint system does not fit snugly against the contours of the rear center seat cushion, install it in a window-side seating position instead.

  1. Run the lap and shoulder belt through or around the child restraint system according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Insert the tongue plate into the buckle until you hear a click.
  3. Take up the slack in the lap belt.
  4. Pull the seatbelt fully from the retractor to switch it from ELR mode to ALR mode, then allow the belt to rewind into the retractor. Clicking sounds indicate the ALR is functioning.
  5. Move the child restraint system back and forth and side to side to confirm it is firmly secured.
  6. Pull the shoulder portion of the belt to confirm that it cannot be pulled out.
  7. Attach the top tether hook to the tether anchorage located behind the rear seat and tighten it securely.
  8. To remove the child restraint system, press the seatbelt buckle release button and allow the belt to retract completely to return to ELR mode.
NOTE

When the child restraint system is no longer in use, remove it and restore the ELR function by allowing the seatbelt to retract fully.

Installing a Booster Seat

WARNING
  • Child restraint systems and seatbelts can become hot in a vehicle left in the sun. Check the seat before placing a child in it.
  • Do not leave an unsecured child restraint system in the vehicle as it may become a hazard during sudden stops or accidents.
CAUTION

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing a child restraint system. Ensure it is securely fastened to reduce the risk of injury in an accident.

  1. For vehicles with a reclining rear seat, adjust the seatback to the upright position.
  2. Place the booster seat in the rear seating position and seat the child on it. The child should sit well back in the booster seat.
  3. Run the lap and shoulder belt through or around the booster seat and the child according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Insert the tongue plate into the buckle until you hear a click, ensuring the belt is not twisted. Position the shoulder belt across the center of the child’s shoulder and the lap belt low on the hips.
  5. To remove the booster seat, press the release button on the seatbelt buckle and allow the belt to retract.
WARNING
  • Never use a twisted or reversed seatbelt.
  • Never place the shoulder belt under the child’s arm or behind the child’s back.
  • The seatbelt must fit snugly to provide full protection.
  • Position the lap belt as low as possible on the child’s hips.
  • Ensure the shoulder belt crosses the center of the child’s shoulder and not the neck.

Installation of Child Restraint Systems Using Lower and Tether Anchorages (LATCH)

WARNING
  • Child restraint systems and seatbelts may become hot in a closed vehicle under sunlight.
  • Always check the child restraint system before placing a child in it.
  • Do not leave an unsecured child restraint system in the vehicle.
