Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Keys

Keys

NOTE: For models with “keyless access with push-button start system”, refer to “Keyless access with push-button start system” F2-9.

  1. Master key
  2. Submaster key
  3. Valet key
  4. Key number plate

Three types of keys are provided for your vehicle: Master key, submaster key, and valet key. The master key and submaster key fit all locks on your vehicle, including:

  • Ignition switch
  • Driver’s door
  • Glove box

The valet key fits only the ignition switch and door locks. You can keep the glove box locked when you leave your vehicle and valet key at a parking facility.

CAUTION: Do not attach a large key holder or key case to either key. It could turn the ignition switch from “ON” to “ACC” or “LOCK”, stopping the engine.

Key Number Plate

The key number is stamped on the key number plate attached to the key set. Write down the key number and keep it in another safe place, not in the vehicle. This number is needed to make a replacement key if you lose your key or lock it inside the vehicle. Refer to “Key replacement” F2-4.

Immobilizer

The immobilizer system prevents unauthorized engine start. Only keys registered with your vehicle’s immobilizer system can operate your vehicle. This system is not a 100% anti-theft guarantee.

For models with keyless access: If you press the push-button ignition switch with an unregistered key, the switch will not turn to “ON” and the engine will not start. Follow “Starting engine” F9-18 if needed.

For models without keyless access: Even if an unregistered key fits the ignition, the engine will stop automatically after several seconds. Pull out the key and try again if the engine does not start. Refer to “Ignition switch (models without push-button start system)” F3-4.

CAUTION:
  • Do not place the key under direct sunlight or heat.
  • Do not get the key wet; wipe dry immediately if wet.
  • Do not modify or remove the system; operation cannot be guaranteed if modified.

Security Precautions

  • Never leave your vehicle unattended with keys inside.
  • Close all windows, moonroof, and lock doors/rear gate before leaving.
  • Do not leave spare keys or key number records in the vehicle.
  • The vehicle has a maintenance-free immobilizer system.

Security Indicator Light

Refer to “Security indicator light” F3-30.

Key Replacement

Your key number plate is required for replacements. New keys must be registered with your vehicle’s immobilizer. Maximum keys:

  • Four (models without keyless access)
  • Seven (models with keyless access)

A previously registered key is required to register a new key. Lost key ID codes remain in memory; erase them for security. Contact your SUBARU dealer for registration or erasure.

Certification for Immobilizer System

  • Models with keyless access: Refer to “Certification for keyless access with push-button start system” F2-19.
  • Models without keyless access:
    • U.S.-spec: FCC ID: MOZRI-38BFH
    • CAUTION – FCC WARNING: Changes/modifications not approved could void user authority. Device complies with Part 15 of FCC Rules: (1) may not cause harmful interference, (2) must accept interference.
    • Canada-spec: Complies with Industry Canada licence-exempt RSS standards. Operation conditions: (1) may not cause interference, (2) must accept interference.
    • Mexico-spec: Standard compliance applies.

Door Locks

Locking and Unlocking from the Outside

NOTE: Unlocking the driver’s door with a key while the alarm is armed triggers the horn. To prevent this:

  • Models with keyless access: Press any button on the access key, turn ignition to “ACC”, or use the access key to grip the door handle or press rear gate opener.
  • Models without keyless access: Press remote transmitter button or insert key in ignition and turn to “ON”.

To lock the driver’s door from outside with the key, turn it forward; to unlock, turn it rearward. Pull the handle to open an unlocked door.

NOTE: For keyless access models, the mechanical key is directional; adjust orientation if it does not insert.

Locking Without a Key

Using lock lever:

  1. Rotate the lock lever forward.
  2. Close the door.

Using power door locking switch:

  1. Press front side (lock side) of switch.
  2. Close the door.

All closed doors and rear gate lock simultaneously. Ensure all doors and rear gate are locked before leaving. Do not leave the key inside when locking without a key.

Locking and Unlocking from the Inside

  1. Unlock
  2. Lock

Rotate the lock lever forward to lock, rearward to unlock. The red mark indicates an unlocked door. Pull the inside handle to open an unlocked door.

WARNING: Keep all doors locked while driving, especially with small children. Proper use of seatbelts and child restraints plus locked doors reduces the chance of being thrown from the vehicle.
