Subaru FORESTER 5th Generation 2019-2024 Lane Change Assist (LCA)

Lane Change Assist (LCA)

Operating Range

The system notifies the driver of vehicles approaching at high speed in neighboring lanes. If a vehicle is detected, the BSD/RCTA approach indicator light(s) on the outside mirror(s) illuminates. When the turn signal lever is operated toward the illuminated side, the indicator flashes to warn the driver.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)

Operating Range

The system alerts the driver to vehicles approaching from either side while reversing, helping check rear and side areas. Warnings include:

  • Flashing BSD/RCTA approach indicator light(s) on outside mirrors
  • A warning buzzer

Detection Range of Radar Sensors

Vehicles that may be detected:

In diagonal parking areas, vehicles crossing the front may be detected. Always check surroundings visually.

Vehicles that may not be detected:

Vehicles blocked by parked vehicles may not be detected. Always check surroundings visually.

System Operation

Operating Conditions
  • Ignition switch in “ON” position
  • BSD/RCTA warning and OFF indicators off
  • Vehicle speed above 6 mph (10 km/h) (except reversing)
  • Shift/select lever in “R” (RCTA only)
Non-Operating Situations
  • BSD/RCTA OFF indicator on
  • Vehicle speed below 6 mph (10 km/h) (except reversing)

BSD/RCTA may stop or malfunction temporarily under these conditions:

  • Radar sensor misaligned
  • Snow or ice on rear bumper around sensors
  • Driving on snow-covered or barren roads for long periods
  • Extreme temperatures around sensors
  • Vehicle battery under- or over-voltage

Once corrected, the system resumes operation and the warning indicator disappears. Persistent warnings require inspection at a SUBARU dealer.

Radar Sensor Limitations

  • Distorted rear bumper or adhered ice, snow, mud
  • Stickers or objects covering sensors
  • Adverse weather (rain, snow, fog)
  • Wet or snow-covered roads

Objects Difficult to Detect

  • Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, stationary objects
  • Vehicles with low body height or unusual shapes
  • Vehicles not approaching or moving at similar speed
  • Oncoming vehicles or lanes beyond neighboring lanes
  • Vehicles traveling slower than you attempt to overtake
  • Extremely narrow lanes

BSD/RCTA Approach Indicator Light / Warning Buzzer

  • BSD/RCTA approach indicator illuminates when vehicles are in neighboring lanes
  • Flashing indicator and buzzer sound when a vehicle approaches from left or right while reversing

BSD/RCTA Approach Indicator Light

Mounted on each outside mirror, illuminates when a vehicle approaches from behind. Flashes if turn signal is toward the detected vehicle side. Flashes while reversing if a vehicle is detected from either side.

Dimming Function

When headlights are on, the indicator light brightness reduces. Brightness may be hard to recognize under sunlight, oncoming headlights, or if illumination control is fully upward.

Warning Buzzer (Reversing)

Sounds along with flashing indicator to warn the driver. Volume can be adjusted via the multi-information display. See “BSD/RCTA” F3-43.

Safety Tips

  • Warnings may be delayed or not issued if a vehicle changes lanes from a non-neighboring lane, driving on steep grades, multiple vehicles in line, tight bends, uneven lane heights, immediately after system activation, or with heavy cargo.
  • During reversing, warnings may be delayed or missed when backing out of angled spaces, large parked vehicles block radar, on sloped roads, or at high reversing speed.
  • Indicator may illuminate near solid objects like guardrails or tunnels and may flash at intersections or near walls/buildings.
  • Vehicles two lanes away may be detected in certain situations.

BSD/RCTA Warning Indicator

System Temporary Stop Indicator

Appears when the system encounters extreme temperatures, abnormal battery voltage, or significant sensor misalignment. Once conditions are corrected, system resumes operation automatically.
