Towing the Vehicle
WARNING: Risk of an accident! The tow rope must not be twisted. Max speed: 50 km/h.
WARNING: Use a braided synthetic fibre rope. Do not use a twisted tow rope.
NOTICE: Keep the tow rope taut. Do not exceed 50 km towing distance.
NOTICE: Danger of gearbox damage! Only tow with front axle raised if gearbox lacks oil. Automatic transmission vehicles must not be towed with rear axle raised.
Tow Rope / Tow Bar Attachment Points
- Front towing eye
- Rear towing eye
- Ball bar of factory-installed towing hitch
Driver Instructions
For towing vehicle: Drive slowly and smoothly. Only accelerate when rope is taut.
For towed vehicle: WARNING: Risk of accident! Ignition off disables brake booster and power steering; steering lock may engage. Switch on ignition if engine cannot start. Move shift lever to neutral or selector lever to N.
Brakes
WARNING: Brake system faults can extend braking distance.
DANGER: Functional restriction of brake booster—manual transmission, vehicle in gear, low revs: depress clutch.
DANGER: Brakes overheating—depress only when required. Ensure air supply to front brakes if spoiler damaged.
Checking Brake Fluid Level
- Vehicle on horizontal surface, engine off
- Level must be within marked range
- If below mark, stop and seek specialist
- Brake fluid standard: VW 501 14 (FMVSS 116 DOT4)
Troubleshooting
- Brake fluid low: stop and seek specialist
- Brake system / ABS faulty: stop and seek specialist
- Worn brake pads: drive cautiously to specialist
- Reduced braking effect: clean brakes by repeated braking if traffic allows
- Engine stopped: brake booster inactive, depress pedal more forcefully
Electric Parking Brake
Operation
WARNING: Risk of key locking! Keep recessed grip in front of button empty.
Manual Switch On
- Pull and hold button
- Symbols light up: in button and instrument cluster
Automatic Shut-Off
Parking brake switches off automatically when starting. To prevent automatic off, keep button pulled.
Manual Shut-Down
- Ignition on, press brake and button simultaneously
Troubleshooting
- Parking brake error: seek specialist
- Parking on steep slope: move to gentler slope
- Noise during operation: normal
- Battery discharged: connect to power source
- Emergency braking: pull and hold button; release to stop
Auto Hold Automatic Holding Function
Secures vehicle from rolling when stopped.
WARNING: Cannot stop vehicle under all conditions (slippery ground, gradients).
Secure and Release Vehicle
- Stop: vehicle automatically secured, brake pedal can be released
- Start: vehicle automatically released
- Automatic protection: vehicle may be secured by parking brake
Operating Conditions
- Driver door closed
- Engine running or switched off by START-STOP
- Auto Hold activated
- Automatic gearbox: selector not in P/N
Activation / Deactivation
- Press button; symbol illuminates when active
- Disable in car wash to allow rolling
Driver Assist Systems
Braking and Stabilising Systems
Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
Helps stabilize vehicle in borderline situations by braking individual wheels.
Flashing: ESC engaged
ESC Sport
Allows sportier driving. Lit: ESC Sport active
Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
Stabilizes vehicle when accelerating on low-grip surfaces. Reduces wheel drive power during spin.
Flashing: ASR engaged
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
Maintains control during emergency braking; pedal may pulsate.
Motor Slip Regulation (MSR)
Maintains control during sudden speed reduction; increases engine speed if wheels lock.
Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)
Stabilizes vehicle on uneven grip by braking spinning wheels.
Electronic Differential Lock (XDL+)
Brakes inside wheel during fast cornering to stabilize vehicle.
Active Steering Assistance (DSR)
Provides steering recommendation in difficult situations.
Hill Hold Control
Maintains brake for ~2 seconds after release on uphill start.
Multi-Collision Brake (MCB)
Reduces risk of secondary collisions after impact. Conditions: frontal/side/rear collision >10 km/h, brakes functional, accelerator not pressed.
Trailer Stability Assist (TSA)
Stabilizes trailer by slowing individual wheels. Conditions: factory hitch, trailer connected, ASR active, speed >60 km/h.
Settings
- Deactivate/activate ASR: press button or use Infotainment menu
- Deactivate/activate ESC Sport: press key or use Infotainment menu
Troubleshooting
- ESC or ASR faulty: stop engine, restart; seek specialist if persists
- ABS faulty: drive cautiously, seek specialist
- Brake system & ABS faulty: stop, seek specialist
Front Assist
Monitors distance to vehicle ahead, warns if safety distance exceeded, performs automatic braking if collision risk.
Status display: illuminated for too small safety distance or collision warning.
