Engine, Exhaust System and Fuel

Bonnet

Opening the bonnet

Before opening:

  • Make sure the windscreen wiper arms are folded down onto the windscreen.
  • Keep everyone away from the engine compartment.

To open:

  • Pull the release lever underneath the dash panel.
  • Release the lock.
  • Lift the bonnet so that the gas pressure springs hold it open.
Closing
  • Pull the flap down.
  • Close the flap with a slight push from a distance of about 20 cm.
  • Check that the bonnet is closed.

NOTICE: Do not press down on an unclosed bonnet.

Engine Oil

Checking the Fill Level and Topping Up

Test conditions:

  • Vehicle on horizontal surface.
  • Parked engine warm.

Checking the level:

  • Wait a few minutes for engine oil to flow back into oil sump.
  • Remove dipstick, wipe with clean cloth, reinsert fully, pull out again.
  • Read oil level and push dipstick back in.

The oil level must be within the marked range.

NOTICE: Risk of damage to engine and exhaust system! Oil level must not be outside marked range. Do not use oil additives.

Consumption

Engine may consume up to 0.5 l/1000 km depending on driving style and conditions. May be higher over next 5000 km.

Refilling
  • Unscrew engine oil filler cap.
  • Top up in 0.5 litre portions with correct specification.
  • Check oil level.
  • Screw on the cover.
Specification

Ask a specialist garage. Temporary use of max 0.5 l of alternate oils permitted:

  • Petrol engines: VW 504 00, VW 508 00, ACEA C3, ACEA C5
  • Diesel engines: VW 507 00, VW 509 00, ACEA C3, API CJ-4; optionally VW 505 01 for vehicles without particulate filter
Changing

Have oil changed by specialist garage.

Troubleshooting
  • Engine oil pressure too low → check level, stop engine, seek specialist if warning continues.
  • Engine oil level too low → check and top up.
  • Engine oil level too high → reduce level, seek specialist if needed.
  • Engine oil sensor impaired → drive cautiously, seek specialist.

Coolant

Coolant Temperature Gauge
  • A: Cold area – avoid high engine speed
  • B: Operating range
  • C: High temperature range
Checking the Fill Level and Topping Up

Test conditions:

  • Vehicle on horizontal surface
  • Engine turned off and cooled

Checking the level: Fill level must be within marked range. Top up if below mark.

NOTICE: Do not overfill; coolant could escape when heated. Tank must not be empty. Stop driving and seek specialist if necessary.

Refilling

CAUTION: Cooling system pressurised. Risk of scalding. Let engine cool. Unscrew cap carefully and refill with correct coolant specification (G12evo TL 774 L). Screw on cap until it clicks.

Troubleshooting
  • Coolant level too low → check level; check radiator fan fuse if OK, seek specialist if needed.
  • Coolant temperature too high → stop engine, let cool, drive on after indicator off.
  • Engine fault → stop engine, seek specialist.
  • Incorrect coolant used → correct with specialist.

Engine Electronics

Troubleshooting
  • Petrol engine control faulty → emergency mode, reduced performance; drive cautiously, seek specialist.
  • Diesel engine control faulty → emergency mode, drive cautiously, seek specialist.
  • Diesel preheating system faulty → emergency mode, drive cautiously, seek specialist.

Particle Filter

Troubleshooting
  • Clogged particle filter → clean filter. Indicator on → higher fuel consumption, reduced power, START-STOP unavailable.
Filter Cleaning Procedure

Diesel engines: Drive ≥60 km/h at ≥2000 rpm; indicator off = successful. If not off in 40 min, seek specialist.

Petrol engines: Drive ≥80 km/h at 3000–5000 rpm; release accelerator to let vehicle roll. Repeat several times. Indicator off = successful; if not off in 30 min, seek specialist.

Exhaust Control System

Troubleshooting
  • Emission control system faulty → emergency mode, reduced power; drive cautiously, seek specialist.

Fuel Filter

Troubleshooting
  • Water in diesel fuel filter → drive cautiously, seek specialist.

Fuel Filler Flap

Opening
  • Press the flap and open it.

AdBlue®

Regulations

Use only AdBlue® compliant with ISO 22241-1. No additives. Freezes below -11°C; system has heating.

Functionality

Urea solution injected automatically into exhaust system to reduce pollutants.

Checking Fill Level and Topping Up

AdBlue® level monitored automatically. Range and min/max top-up displayed in instrument cluster. If range = 0 km, engine cannot start; top up to maximum if possible.

Refilling Requirements
  • Vehicle unlocked, ignition off, horizontal surface
  • Refill with fuel nozzle, refill bottle/canister, or at specialist garage
Refilling Procedure
  • Open tank flap, remove cap, place cap aside
  • Top up AdBlue® until nozzle/canister stops flow
  • Replace cap and tank flap, leave ignition on 30 sec to detect refill
