Key

Key Overview

The vehicle has one of the following keys.

Key with pop-out key bit
  • Locking the vehicle
  • Operating the boot lid
  • Unlocking the vehicle
  • A Battery status warning lamp
  • B Locking button for folding the key bit in/out
Key with removable key bit
  • Locking the vehicle
  • Operating the boot lid
  • Unlocking the vehicle
  • A Battery status warning lamp
  • B Locking tab for removal of the key bit
NOTICE
  • Protect the key from moisture and strong vibrations.
  • Keep the grooves in the key clean.

The effective range of the key signal is about 30 m. The range may be reduced due to signal interference from other transmitters.

Removing the key bit
  1. Unlock the securing tab A.
  2. Remove the key bit B.

Troubleshooting

The battery in the key is almost empty
  • After pressing a button on the key, the warning light does not flash.
  • A message stating that the battery must be changed is displayed.

The vehicle cannot be unlocked or locked with the remote control

Possible reasons:

  • The battery in the key is empty.
  • The key is not synchronized.

Synchronize the key as follows:

  1. Press one of the buttons on the key.
  2. Unlock the door within 1 minute with the key via the locking cylinder » page 25.

The key may require synchronization if one of the buttons has been repeatedly pressed outside the effective range of the remote control.

Changing the key battery

The new battery must comply with the specification of the original battery.

Key with pop-out key bit
  1. Fold out the key bit.
  2. Release the battery cover with your thumbnail or by inserting a flat-head screwdriver at the marked points.
  3. Open the battery cover.
  4. Remove the battery.
  5. Press any button on the remote key to reset the key.
  6. Insert the new battery.
  7. Fit the battery cover and press until it clicks into place.
Key with removable key bit
  1. Remove the key bit.
  2. Insert a small flat-head screwdriver into the opening.
  3. Loosen the battery cover by turning the screwdriver.
  4. Slide off the battery cover.
  5. Remove the battery.
  6. Press any button on the remote key to reset the key.
  7. Insert the new battery.
  8. Fit the battery cover and press until it clicks into place.

Memory function of the key

Functionality

Applies to vehicles that do not have the personalisation function.

Each time the vehicle is locked, the position of the driver's seat and rearview mirror are stored in the memory of the remote key used to lock the vehicle.

Operation
Retrieve stored position
  1. Unlock the vehicle.
  2. Open the driver's door.

The driver's seat and exterior mirrors move to the position assigned to the key used to unlock the vehicle.

Stop position change
  • Press any button on the seat being adjusted.
  • Or press a button on the key.
Settings
Activate or deactivate the memory function

This function is activated or deactivated through the Infotainment system menu.

Storing driver’s seat and mirror position

The position is automatically stored each time the vehicle is locked. The seat position is stored only if the seat backrest inclination is less than approximately 110° and the seat is not in an end position.

Storing front passenger exterior mirror position for reversing
  1. Unlock the vehicle with the key.
  2. Turn on the ignition.
  3. Activate the mirror folding function in the Infotainment menu.
  4. Turn the exterior mirror knob to the required position.
  5. Engage reverse gear.
  6. Adjust the mirror to the desired position.
  7. Disengage reverse gear.

The mirror position is saved.

Central locking

Functionality

The central locking system locks and unlocks all doors, the fuel filler flap and the boot lid at the same time.

  • Unlock indicator: double flashing of the indicator lights.
  • Lock indicator: single flashing of the indicator lights.

After locking the vehicle, the warning light in the driver's door flashes quickly for about 2 seconds and then flashes regularly at longer intervals.

If no door or the boot lid is opened within 45 seconds after unlocking, the vehicle automatically locks again.

SAFE function

Depending on the equipment, the SAFE function can be integrated into the central locking system.

The SAFE function prevents the doors from opening from the inside once the vehicle is locked.

DANGER
When the vehicle is locked and the SAFE function is active, nobody is allowed to remain inside the vehicle.
Turn off the SAFE function
  • Double lock the vehicle within 2 seconds.
  • Or deactivate interior monitoring » page 26.

When the SAFE function is switched off, the door can be opened from the inside by pulling the door handle once.

The SAFE function activates again after locking the vehicle.

Lock/unlock using the central locking button
  1. Press the button in the centre console.

The symbol in the button lights up when the vehicle is locked.

The button locks all doors and the boot lid.

Unlocking also occurs when opening a door from the inside or removing the key from the ignition.

A locked vehicle with central locking may make it difficult for emergency responders to enter the vehicle.
Setting the unlocking and locking function

The settings are configured through the Infotainment system.

All doors

Unlocks all doors, the boot lid and the fuel filler flap.

Single door

Unlocks only the driver's door and fuel filler flap.

Doors on one side of the vehicle

Unlocks only the doors on the driver's side and the fuel filler flap.

Automatic locking after starting

All doors and the boot lid lock automatically once the vehicle reaches a speed of 15 km/h.

The vehicle unlocks when a door is opened from the inside or the key is removed from the ignition.

An automatically locked vehicle can make it difficult for emergency responders to enter the vehicle.

Troubleshooting

Central locking fault
  • The warning light in the driver's door flashes quickly for about 2 seconds.
  • Then it lights continuously.
  • After about 30 seconds it flashes slowly.

Seek assistance from a specialist garage.

Mechanically unlocking and locking the door

Unlocking and locking with the lock cylinder
Remove the cover
  1. Pull the door handle and hold it.
  2. Insert the key bit into the recess on the underside of the cover.
  3. Lift the cover in the direction of the arrow.
  4. Release the door handle.
Unlocking and locking using a key with a fold-out key bit
  • Left-hand drive: Insert the key with the buttons facing upwards into the lock cylinder.
  • Right-hand drive: Insert the key with the buttons facing downwards into the lock cylinder.
Unlocking and locking using a key with a removable key bit

Insert the removed key bit with the handle facing downwards into the lock cylinder.

Install cover
  1. Pull the door handle and hold it.
  2. Replace the cover.
  3. Release the door handle.
Locking the door without the lock cylinder
  1. Open the door.
  2. For vehicles with a panel over the opening, remove the panel.
