Mitsubishi L200

Driver’s and Front Passenger’s Airbags

The driver’s airbag and the front passenger’s airbag are designed to inflate at the same time even if the passenger seat is not occupied.

Driver’s Knee Airbag System*

The driver’s knee airbag is located under the steering wheel. It is designed to deploy at the same time as the driver’s front airbag.

Deployment of Front Airbags and Driver’s Knee Airbag

ARE DESIGNED TO DEPLOY when…

The front airbags and driver’s knee airbag are designed to deploy when the vehicle suffers a moderate to severe frontal impact.

Typical conditions:

  1. Head-on collision with a solid wall at approximately 25 km/h (16 mph) or higher.
  2. Moderate-to-severe frontal impact within the shaded area between the arrows.

Deployment occurs if impact severity is above the designed threshold level, comparable to striking a solid, non-deforming wall at approximately 25 km/h (16 mph).

If the vehicle strikes an object that deforms or moves (such as another vehicle, pole, or guard rail), the threshold speed for deployment may be considerably higher.

Seat belts are the primary means of protection. Always wear them properly to maintain a safe distance from the steering wheel and instrument panel during airbag deployment.

MAY NOT DEPLOY when…

In certain frontal collisions, the vehicle body structure may absorb the shock. In such cases, airbags may not deploy regardless of visible vehicle damage.

Examples:

  1. Collision with a utility pole, tree, or other narrow object.
  2. Vehicle slides under the rear body of a truck.
  3. Oblique frontal impacts.

ARE NOT DESIGNED TO DEPLOY when…

Typical conditions:

  1. Rear-end collisions.
  2. Side collisions.
  3. Vehicle rolls onto its side or roof.

Always wear your seat belt properly, as airbags do not protect occupants in all types of collisions.

MAY DEPLOY when…

The airbags may deploy if the underside of the vehicle suffers a moderate-to-severe impact.

Examples:

  1. Collision with an elevated median/island or kerb.
  2. Vehicle travels over a deep hole or pothole.
  3. Vehicle drives down a steep slope and hits the ground.

WARNING

  • Do not attach anything to the steering wheel’s padded cover.
  • Do not place objects on or attach items to the instrument panel above the glove box.
  • Do not attach accessories to or in front of the windscreen.
  • Do not attach additional keys or heavy objects to the ignition key.
  • Do not attach accessories to the lower portion of the driver’s instrument panel.
  • Do not place objects between the airbags and occupants.
  • Do not touch airbag components immediately after deployment; they may be hot.
  • The airbag system is designed to work only once and must be replaced after deployment.

Side Airbag System*

The side airbags (A) are contained in the driver and front passenger seatbacks.

They are designed to inflate only on the side of impact, even if no passenger is seated.

Curtain Airbag System*

Curtain airbags are contained in the front pillars and roof side rail. They inflate only on the impacted side.

If the airbag control unit detects a rollover, the curtain airbags will deploy (if equipped).

Deployment of Side and Curtain Airbags*

ARE DESIGNED TO DEPLOY when…

Side and curtain airbags deploy during moderate-to-severe side impacts to the middle of the passenger compartment.

  1. Moderate-to-severe impact to the middle of the vehicle’s side structure.
  2. Vehicle rollover detected (curtain airbag only).

Seat belts remain the primary protection system. Always wear them properly.

MAY NOT DEPLOY when…

In some side impacts, the vehicle body absorbs the shock and airbags may not deploy.

Examples:

  1. Side impacts away from the passenger compartment.
  2. Collision with a motorcycle or small vehicle.
  3. Collision with a pole, tree, or narrow object.
  4. Oblique side impacts.
  5. Vehicle rolls onto its side or roof.

ARE NOT DESIGNED TO DEPLOY when…

  1. Head-on collisions.
  2. Rear-end collisions.
  3. Pitch end over end.

WARNING

  • Side and curtain airbags supplement seat belts; always sit upright and properly restrained.
  • Do not lean against the door or extend arms out the window.
  • Rear seat occupants must not hold onto front seatbacks.
  • Do not place objects near front seatbacks.
  • Do not place stickers or additional trim on seatbacks.
  • Do not install seat covers on seats equipped with side airbags.
  • Do not attach devices near curtain airbag deployment areas (windscreen, pillars, roof side, assist grips).
  • Do not hang heavy or pointed objects on coat hooks.
  • Do not allow children to lean against doors near side or curtain airbags.
  • Work on side and curtain airbags should be performed by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service Point.

SRS Warning Lamp

The SRS warning lamp is located on the instrument panel and checks the system when the ignition is turned ON.

  • The lamp illuminates briefly and then turns off under normal operation.
  • If a fault is detected, the lamp remains on.
  • The lamp is shared by the SRS airbag and seat belt pretensioner system.

WARNING

  • If the SRS warning lamp does not illuminate at ignition ON, remains on, or comes on while driving, have the vehicle inspected immediately by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service Point.
NOTE
  • On vehicles equipped with ERA-GLONASS, the SRS warning lamp illuminates if the ERA-GLONASS system operates.

SRS Servicing

WARNING

  • Maintenance on or near SRS components should only be performed by a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service Point.
  • Do not modify the steering wheel, seat belt retractor, bumper, or body structure.
  • After any vehicle damage, have the SRS inspected.
  • Do not modify front seats, centre pillar, or centre console (vehicles with side airbags).
  • If there is damage where an airbag is stored, have the system inspected.
NOTE
  • If the vehicle is scrapped, follow local legislation and contact a MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service Point for safe airbag system dismantling.
