Sport AT (Automatic Transmission)
NOTE:
The Sport AT has an option that is not included in a traditional automatic
transmission. It allows the driver to select each gear manually instead of
leaving shifting entirely to the transmission.
Even if you intend to use the automatic transmission as a traditional
automatic, be aware that you can inadvertently shift into manual shift mode.
An inappropriate gear may be retained as vehicle speed increases.
If you notice the engine speed increasing excessively or hear the engine racing,
confirm that you have not accidentally entered manual shift mode.
Shift-Lock System
The shift-lock system prevents shifting out of P unless the brake
pedal is depressed.
To shift from P:
- Depress and hold the brake pedal.
- Start the engine.
- Press and hold the lock-release button.
- Move the selector lever.
NOTE:
- The selector lever cannot be shifted from P if the ignition is in ACC or OFF.
- The ignition cannot be switched OFF unless the selector lever is in P.
Shift-Lock Override
If the selector lever does not move from P using the proper procedure,
continue holding the brake pedal and follow these steps:
- Remove the shift-lock override cover using a cloth-wrapped flat-head screwdriver.
- Insert a flat screwdriver and push it down.
- Press and hold the lock-release button.
- Move the selector lever.
Have the system inspected by a qualified repairer.
Transmission Ranges
The shift position indication illuminates in the instrument cluster when the ignition is ON.
P (Park)
P locks the transmission and prevents the front wheels from rotating.
WARNING:
Always set the selector lever to P and apply the parking brake. Relying only on P
is dangerous if it fails to hold the vehicle.
CAUTION:
- Do not shift into P, N, or R while the vehicle is moving.
- Do not shift into a driving gear or reverse while engine speed is above idle.
R (Reverse)
In R, the vehicle moves backward. Always come to a complete stop before shifting to or from R.
N (Neutral)
In N, the wheels and transmission are not locked. The vehicle can roll freely.
WARNING:
- Do not shift from N or P into a driving gear while engine speed is above idle.
- Do not shift into N while driving.
CAUTION:
Do not shift into N while driving. This can cause transmission damage.
Apply the parking brake or depress the brake pedal before moving the selector lever from N.
D (Drive)
D is the normal driving position. The transmission automatically shifts through a 6-gear sequence.
M (Manual)
M enables manual shift mode. Gears can be shifted up or down by operating the selector lever.
Manual Shift Mode
Manual shift mode provides greater control of engine rpm and torque by allowing manual gear selection.
To enter manual mode: Shift the lever from D to M.
To return to automatic mode: Shift the lever from M to D.
NOTE:
- Changing to manual mode while driving will not damage the transmission.
- If shifted to M while stopped, the gear shifts to M1.
Manually Shifting Up
M1 → M2 → M3 → M4 → M5 → M6
- Using selector lever: Tap the lever back (+).
- Using steering shift switch: Pull the UP switch (+/OFF).
WARNING:
Keep your hands on the steering wheel rim when using steering shift switches.
Manually Shifting Down
M6 → M5 → M4 → M3 → M2 → M1
- Using selector lever: Tap the lever forward (–).
- Using steering shift switch: Pull the DOWN switch (–).
WARNING:
Do not use engine braking on slippery surfaces or at high speeds.
Second Gear Fixed Mode
When the selector lever is moved back (+) at approximately 10 km/h (6.2 mph) or less,
the transmission enters second gear fixed mode for easier acceleration on slippery roads.
Moving the selector lever back (+) or forward (–) cancels this mode.
Shift Gear Speed Limit
In manual mode, each gear has a speed limit. Shifting outside the allowable range
will not occur, and the gear indication may flash twice to notify the driver.
- Shift up: Not possible below speed limit.
- Shift down: Not possible above speed limit.
- Kickdown: Full accelerator depression shifts to a lower gear (except when DSC is OFF).
- Auto-shift down: Occurs automatically during deceleration.
Direct Mode
Direct mode allows temporary gear shifting using steering shift switches
while the selector lever is in D.
Direct mode cancels automatically if:
- The UP switch is held rearward for a certain time.
- The vehicle is driven for a period of time.
- The vehicle stops or moves slowly.
Manual shift mode is recommended if a specific gear must be maintained for extended driving.
Driving Tips
WARNING:
Do not allow the vehicle to move opposite to the selected gear position.
Loss of power brake and steering assist may occur if the engine stalls.
Passing
Depress the accelerator fully for extra power. The transmission shifts to a lower gear depending on speed.
Climbing Steep Grades
- Depress the brake pedal.
- Shift to D or M1.
- Release brake while gradually accelerating.
Descending Steep Grades
Shift to lower gears depending on conditions. Descend slowly and use brakes occasionally
to prevent overheating.
