Front Passenger Air Bag Deactivation Switch

WARNING

Do not deactivate the front passenger air bag unnecessarily. If turned off unnecessarily, the front passenger will not receive the added protection of the air bag and serious injuries or death could occur. Except when installing a child-restraint system on the front passenger seat, do not turn the air bag deactivation switch to the OFF position.

The front passenger air bag deactivation switch is used to deactivate the front passenger front and side air bags and the front passenger seat belt pretensioner system when installing a child-restraint system on the front passenger seat.

When the ignition is switched ON, both front passenger air bag deactivation indicator lights illuminate regardless of switch position. The indicator light then turns on/off depending on conditions.

Switch Position Air Bag / Pretensioner Operation Indicator Light
OFF Deactivate ON
ON Ready Turns off after a short period
NOTE
  • Have the system inspected if the indicator does not illuminate when ignition is ON.
  • If the indicator does not turn off after a short period with switch ON, inspection is required.

Switch Positions

Before driving, confirm the switch position using the auxiliary key.

WARNING

Do not leave the key in the air bag deactivation switch. This may unintentionally deactivate the system and reduce passenger protection.

OFF Position

Front passenger air bag, side air bag and pretensioners do not operate.

  1. Insert the key and turn clockwise to OFF.
  2. Remove the key.
  3. Confirm indicator light remains illuminated with ignition ON.
ON Position

Front passenger air bag, side air bag and pretensioners operate.

  1. Insert the key and turn anticlockwise to ON.
  2. Remove the key.
  3. Confirm indicator light turns off after a short period.

How the SRS Air Bags Work

SRS air bags work together with seat belts to help reduce injuries during an accident. Always wear seat belts properly.

Seat Belt Pretensioners

Pretensioners deploy during moderate or severe frontal collisions, side collisions, and roll-over accidents.

Driver Air Bag

Mounted in the steering wheel and inflates to reduce head and chest injury. Deployment energy varies based on seat position.

Front Passenger Air Bag

Mounted in the instrument panel and operates similarly to the driver air bag.

Driver Knee Air Bag

Deploys to reduce injury to the driver's legs during frontal impact.

Side Air Bags

Mounted in the seatbacks and inflate on the impacted side during side collisions.

Curtain Air Bags

Mounted along roof edges and deploy to protect occupants' heads during side impacts and roll-over accidents.

SRS Air Bag Deployment Criteria

SRS equipment deployment depends on collision type and severity. No air bag or pretensioner deploys during rear collisions.

Limitations to SRS Air Bag

  • Frontal impacts with poles or offset collisions may not deploy air bags.
  • Side impacts with trees or motorcycles may not deploy air bags.
  • Certain roll-over events may not be detected.

Constant Monitoring

The system continuously monitors sensors, modules, wiring, pretensioners, and indicator lights to ensure readiness while the ignition is ON and the vehicle is being driven.
