Routine Service
We highly recommend these items be inspected daily, or at least weekly:
- Engine Oil Level (page 6-14)
- Engine Coolant Level (page 6-15)
- Brake and Clutch Fluid Level (page 6-16)
- Washer Fluid Level (page 6-17)
- Battery Maintenance (page 6-24)
- Tyre Inflation Pressure (page 6-28)
Improper or incomplete service may result in problems. This section covers only items that are easy to perform. Several procedures can only be done by a qualified service technician with special tools. Improper DIY maintenance during the warranty period may affect coverage. If unsure, have an expert repairer, we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer, perform the work.
Dispose of waste oil and fluids properly in accordance with environmental laws. We recommend entrusting oil and fluid changes to an Authorised Mazda Repairer.
WARNING: Do not perform maintenance if you lack sufficient knowledge, experience, or proper tools. Have maintenance work done by a qualified technician. Performing maintenance improperly can cause serious injury.
When working under the bonnet with the engine running, remove all jewellery (rings, bracelets, watches, necklaces), loose clothing, scarves, and ties to prevent entanglement with moving parts. Pull over to a safe location, switch off the ignition, and ensure the fan is not running before working near the cooling fan.
Do not leave items in the engine compartment. Tools or rags left behind could cause engine damage or fire.
Bonnet
WARNING: Always check that the bonnet is closed and securely locked. An unsecured bonnet may fly open while driving and block the driver's vision.
Opening the Bonnet
- With the vehicle parked, pull the release handle to unlock the bonnet.
- Insert your hand into the bonnet opening, slide the latch lever to the left, and lift the bonnet.
- Grasp the support rod in the padded area and secure it in the support rod hole to hold the bonnet open.
1. Pad
2. Support rod
Closing the Bonnet
- Ensure all filler caps are in place and all loose items are removed.
- Lift the bonnet, grasp the padded area on the support rod, and secure it in the clip. Verify it is secured before closing.
- Lower the bonnet slowly to about 20 cm above the closed position, then let it drop.
1. Clip
CAUTION: Do not push excessively when closing the bonnet to avoid deformation.

Engine Oil
NOTE: Changing the engine oil should be done by an expert repairer, we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer.
Recommended Oil
Use engine oil with the correct specification to protect the engine and maintain maintenance intervals. Do not use oils that do not meet the specified requirements. Use of unsuitable oil may cause engine damage not covered by the Mazda Warranty.
- Grade: API SL/SM/SN or ILSAC GF-III/GF-IV/GF-V (Australia), API SN or higher, or ILSAC GF-V or higher (New Zealand)
- Consider temperature range and recommended viscosity for fuel economy and cold-weather operation.
CAUTION: Using oils outside the recommended viscosity for your temperature range may damage the engine.
NOTE: Engines consume oil under normal driving conditions (~0.8 L/1,000 km). Consumption may be higher during running-in or under extreme driving conditions.
Inspecting Engine Oil Level
- Ensure the vehicle is on a level surface.
- Warm up engine to normal operating temperature.
- Turn off engine and wait 5 minutes for oil to return to the sump.
- Pull out dipstick, wipe clean, and reinsert fully.
- Pull out again and check level. It should be between MIN and MAX. Add oil if needed.
- Ensure O-ring is properly positioned before reinserting dipstick.
- Reinsert dipstick fully.
CAUTION: Do not overfill engine oil. This may cause damage.
Engine Coolant
Inspecting Coolant Level
WARNING: Do not use a flame or add coolant when the engine is hot. Hot engine parts can burn you. Always switch off ignition and ensure fan is not running before inspecting.
Inspect antifreeze protection and coolant level in the reservoir at least once a year and before travelling to freezing temperatures. Check hoses and replace if swollen or deteriorated. Coolant should be at FULL in radiator and between FULL and LOW in the reservoir. Securely tighten the cap after adding coolant.
CAUTION: Radiator coolant can damage paint; rinse quickly if spilled. Use FL-22 coolant if marked. Using incorrect coolant may cause serious engine damage.
NOTE: If reservoir is empty or coolant is frequently required, consult an expert repairer, we recommend an Authorised Mazda Repairer.
Brake/Clutch Fluid
Inspecting Brake/Clutch Fluid Level
WARNING: Low brake/clutch fluid is dangerous. Could indicate brake lining wear or a leak, causing brake failure. Have inspected by an expert repairer.
The brakes and clutch share a reservoir. Keep fluid level between MAX and MIN lines. Drops in level occur with wear; if excessively low, have system inspected by an expert repairer.
