Brake System

Foot Brake

This vehicle has power-assisted brakes that adjust automatically through normal use.

Should power-assist fail, you can stop by applying greater force than normal to the brake pedal. However, the distance required to stop will be greater than usual.

WARNING:
  • Do not coast with the engine stalled or turned off. Braking will require more effort, and power-assist could be depleted, resulting in longer stopping distances or an accident.
  • Shift to a lower gear when going down steep hills. Continuous brake application can overheat the brakes and cause brake failure.
  • Dry off wet brakes by driving slowly and lightly applying the brakes several times until normal performance returns.
CAUTION:
  • Do not drive with your foot resting on the clutch or brake pedal unnecessarily.
  • Brake parts may wear faster and brakes may overheat.
  • Always depress the brake pedal with your right foot.
  • Wear appropriate driving shoes to avoid unintended pedal contact.

Electric Parking Brake (EPB)

The EPB system applies the parking brake using an electric motor and can operate automatically or manually.

The EPB switch indicator light turns on when applying the parking brake and turns off when releasing it.

WARNING:
  • Do not drive with the parking brake applied. Brake parts may overheat, leading to an accident.
  • Always apply the parking brake when leaving the vehicle.
NOTE:
  • The parking brake cannot be applied or released if the battery is dead.
  • Operation sounds while applying or releasing are normal.
  • The brake pedal may move slightly during EPB operation; this is normal.
  • If there is a problem with the foot brake while driving, pulling up the EPB switch continuously will decelerate or stop the vehicle.
Manual Operation

Applying manually: Depress the brake pedal firmly and pull up the EPB switch.

Releasing manually: With ignition ON and brake pedal depressed, press the EPB switch.

If the EPB switch is pressed without depressing the brake pedal, a message will be displayed instructing the driver to depress the brake pedal.

Auto Operation

Automatic apply: When ignition switches from ON to ACC or OFF.

Automatic release: When all conditions below are met:

  • Engine running
  • Driver’s door closed
  • Driver’s seat belt fastened
  • Manual transmission: shift lever not in neutral and clutch halfway depressed
  • Automatic transmission: selector lever in D, M, or R
NOTE: If the accelerator pedal is pressed unintentionally while the parking brake is applied, the parking brake may release automatically.
Cancelling Parking Brake Automatic Operation

Method 1:

  1. Switch ignition ON.
  2. Turn off AUTOHOLD.
  3. Press EPB switch for 2 seconds until a sound is heard.
  4. Release switch and switch ignition OFF within 5 seconds.

Method 2:

  1. Switch ignition ON.
  2. Turn off AUTOHOLD.
  3. Switch ignition OFF while pressing the EPB switch.
NOTE:
  • When parking after cancelling auto operation, secure the vehicle properly.
  • Auto operation may not cancel on steep slopes.
  • Auto operation is restored when ignition is switched ON.

Warning Light

The warning light turns on when the brake system has a malfunction.

Brake Pad Wear Indicator

When disc brake pads become worn, built-in wear indicators contact the disc plates, producing a screeching noise to indicate replacement is required.

WARNING: Do not drive with worn disc pads. Consult an expert repairer immediately.
NOTE: Brake squeak or squeal in high humidity does not indicate a malfunction.

Brake Assist

During emergency braking, the brake assist system provides additional braking force when the brake pedal is pressed hard or quickly.

NOTE:
  • The brake pedal may feel softer while braking force increases.
  • A motor or pump noise may be heard during operation.
  • Brake assist does not replace the main braking system.

Brake Override System

If the brake and accelerator pedals are pressed simultaneously, the brake override system prioritises braking for safety.

NOTE: Operation of the brake override system can be turned on or off via vehicle settings.
