AdBlue® is the brand name of the solution required for the operation of the SCR system. BlueHDi vehicles have a specific AdBlue® additive tank with a capacity of 17 litres. Filling of the AdBlue® tank can be done using 5 or 10 litre containers or 1.89 litre bottles.
The objective of BlueHDi technology is to reduce emissions of NOx (nitrous oxides) in the air by up to 90%, using a system that converts NOx into water vapour and nitrogen in a dedicated catalytic converter known as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction).
This system meets the Euro 6 emissions standard adopted by the European Union to limit pollutant emissions from internal combustion engines. The SCR technology used on BlueHDi engines involves the injection of AdBlue® fluid into the exhaust system.
Check that the product is within its use-by date and read the instructions on the label. If you want to fill the AdBlue® tank yourself, ensure that you have a suitable filler pipe, which may or may not be supplied with the additive container.
This operation can also be carried out by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.
While the quantity of AdBlue® in the additive tank is sufficient, no information is displayed. However, once the additive level drops to the quantity needed for a range of about 1,500 miles (2,400 km), you are warned by temporary signals such as a warning lamp, message, or audible signal.
When the AdBlue® tank becomes empty, restarting the engine becomes impossible. Different alert levels are triggered according to the remaining driving range.
It is strongly recommended not to wait for successive alerts before topping up the AdBlue® tank.
Press the information button to display the driving range. With the touch screen:
If the range is greater than 3,100 miles (5,000 km), no range value is displayed.
When switching on the ignition, a warning lamp may come on with an audible signal and a message indicating the remaining range before engine starting is prevented.
If the tank becomes empty, the system required by regulations prevents engine starting. To restart the engine, at least 3.8 litres of AdBlue® must be added.
If a fault occurs with the SCR emissions control system, warning lamps come on with an audible signal and a message such as "Emissions fault".
If the fault is confirmed after about 30 miles (50 km) of driving, the system warns that engine starting will be prevented after approximately 150 miles (240 km).
While driving, the warning message appears every 30 seconds until the fault is repaired. You should contact a PEUGEOT dealer or qualified workshop as soon as possible.
A system preventing engine start is automatically activated about 650 miles (1,100 km) after confirmation of an SCR system fault.
If AdBlue® fluid is spilled on you, wash immediately with cold water or wipe with a clean damp cloth. If the additive crystallises, clean it using a sponge and hot water.
In winter conditions, ensure the temperature of the vehicle is above -11°C before topping up, as frozen AdBlue® cannot be poured into the tank.
