Peugeot 208 2016-2022 BlueHDi and AdBlue® Additive

BlueHDi and AdBlue® Additive

SCR Technology

AdBlue® is the brand name of the solution required for the operation of the SCR system. BlueHDi vehicles have a specific AdBlue® additive tank with a capacity of 17 litres. Filling of the AdBlue® tank can be done using 5 or 10 litre containers or 1.89 litre bottles.

The objective of BlueHDi technology is to reduce emissions of NOx (nitrous oxides) in the air by up to 90%, using a system that converts NOx into water vapour and nitrogen in a dedicated catalytic converter known as SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

This system meets the Euro 6 emissions standard adopted by the European Union to limit pollutant emissions from internal combustion engines. The SCR technology used on BlueHDi engines involves the injection of AdBlue® fluid into the exhaust system.

Check that the product is within its use-by date and read the instructions on the label. If you want to fill the AdBlue® tank yourself, ensure that you have a suitable filler pipe, which may or may not be supplied with the additive container.

This operation can also be carried out by a PEUGEOT dealer or a qualified workshop.

Advice

While the quantity of AdBlue® in the additive tank is sufficient, no information is displayed. However, once the additive level drops to the quantity needed for a range of about 1,500 miles (2,400 km), you are warned by temporary signals such as a warning lamp, message, or audible signal.

When the AdBlue® tank becomes empty, restarting the engine becomes impossible. Different alert levels are triggered according to the remaining driving range.

  • First alert: triggered at a remaining driving range of about 1,500 miles (2,400 km).
  • Second alert: triggered at a remaining driving range of about 375 miles (600 km).
  • At 0 miles remaining, the engine cannot be restarted after a stop.

It is strongly recommended not to wait for successive alerts before topping up the AdBlue® tank.

Driving Range Information

Press the information button to display the driving range. With the touch screen:

  1. Select the "Driving assistance" menu.
  2. Select "Diagnostic".
  3. Select CHECK.

If the range is greater than 3,100 miles (5,000 km), no range value is displayed.

Warning Alerts

When switching on the ignition, a warning lamp may come on with an audible signal and a message indicating the remaining range before engine starting is prevented.

  • Between 600 and 2,400 km (375 – 1,500 miles): message displayed every 300 km while driving.
  • Between 0 and 600 km (0 – 375 miles): message displayed every 30 seconds while driving.
  • At 0 km: the AdBlue® tank is empty and engine restart becomes impossible.

If the tank becomes empty, the system required by regulations prevents engine starting. To restart the engine, at least 3.8 litres of AdBlue® must be added.

SCR System Fault

If a fault occurs with the SCR emissions control system, warning lamps come on with an audible signal and a message such as "Emissions fault".

If the fault is confirmed after about 30 miles (50 km) of driving, the system warns that engine starting will be prevented after approximately 150 miles (240 km).

While driving, the warning message appears every 30 seconds until the fault is repaired. You should contact a PEUGEOT dealer or qualified workshop as soon as possible.

A system preventing engine start is automatically activated about 650 miles (1,100 km) after confirmation of an SCR system fault.

Topping-up the AdBlue® Additive

If AdBlue® fluid is spilled on you, wash immediately with cold water or wipe with a clean damp cloth. If the additive crystallises, clean it using a sponge and hot water.

Precautions
  • Use only AdBlue® additive that meets the ISO 22241 standard.
  • AdBlue® is a urea-based solution that is non-flammable, colourless and odourless.
  • Store the product in a cool area.
  • Do not dispose of empty containers in household waste.
  • Place empty containers in dedicated recycling containers or return them to your dealer.
Parking Before Filling
  • Park the vehicle on a flat and level surface.
  • Switch off the ignition and remove the key.
  • If overflow occurs, wipe around the filler with a damp cloth.

In winter conditions, ensure the temperature of the vehicle is above -11°C before topping up, as frozen AdBlue® cannot be poured into the tank.

Access to the AdBlue® Tank
  1. Raise the boot carpet.
  2. Depending on equipment, remove the spare wheel or storage box.
Opening
  • Turn the black cap a quarter turn anti-clockwise without pressing and remove it.
  • Turn the blue cap one-sixth turn anti-clockwise.
  • Remove the cap.
Filling
  • Pour the contents of the AdBlue® bottle into the tank.
  • If the tank is completely empty, add at least 3.8 litres (two 1.89 litre bottles).
  • Clean any spillage using a damp cloth.
Closing
  • Refit the blue cap and turn it one-sixth turn clockwise.
  • Refit the black cap and turn it a quarter turn clockwise.
  • Ensure the indicator marks align correctly.
  • Return the spare wheel or storage box if removed.
  • Refit the boot carpet and close the tailgate.
Important Notes
  • After topping up following a breakdown due to lack of additive, wait about 5 minutes before switching on the ignition.
  • Do not open the driver's door, lock the vehicle, or insert the key during this time.
  • Switch on the ignition and wait 10 seconds before starting the engine.
  • Keep AdBlue® out of the reach of children.
  • Never transfer AdBlue® to another container or dilute it with water.
  • Never pour AdBlue® into the Diesel fuel tank.
  • Do not store AdBlue® containers inside the vehicle.
