Proper tire inflation is essential for safe operation. Check tires daily before driving and inspect pressures at least monthly or before long trips. Inflate to recommended pressures (see Inflating the Tires, page 447).
Inflating the Tires
- Under-inflation is a common cause of tire failure and can lead to accidents.
- Do not use the information display as a tire gauge.
- Use recommended cold inflation pressures for optimum performance and wear.
- Adjust hot tire pressures by adding 4 psi (27.6 kPa) over recommended cold pressure if measured after driving.
Inspecting the Tire for Wear
Replace tires when tread reaches 2/32 inch (1.6 mm) or wear bars are visible. Periodically check for uneven wear and remove debris.
Inspecting the Tire for Damage
- Check sidewalls for cuts, cracks, bruises, or bulges.
- Have suspected internal damage inspected professionally.
- Damaged or excessively worn tires should not be used.
Safety Practices
- Do not rapidly spin tires when stuck; can cause explosion.
- Do not spin wheels over 34 mph (55 km/h).
- High-speed driving increases hazard risk and tire damage potential.
- Replace damaged tires with the spare and visit an authorized retailer.
- Do not overload tires; follow gross axle weight and vehicle load limits.
Tire Alterations and Repairs
- Do not alter tires; alterations can void warranty and cause accidents.
- Have punctured tires inspected and repaired following USTMA recommendations.
- Plug-only repairs are not recommended.
Storage
- Store tires in a cool, dry, indoor environment.
- Remove weight from tires if stored more than a month.
- Avoid heat, ozone, grease, gasoline, and other damaging substances.
