How Do the Front Airbags Work

The driver and front passenger airbags deploy during significant frontal and near-frontal crashes.

The driver and passenger front airbag system consists of:

  • Driver and passenger airbag modules.
  • Front passenger sensing system.
  • Crash sensors and monitoring system with readiness indicator.

Airbags are a supplemental restraint system designed to work with seatbelts to help protect occupants from certain upper body injuries. Airbags inflate rapidly and may cause injury if occupants are not properly restrained.

If an airbag deploys, you may hear a loud bang and see harmless powder residue. Temporary irritation, abrasions, swelling, or hearing effects may occur. Routine airbag maintenance is not required.

How Do the Side Airbags Work

Warning: Do not place objects near airbag areas or use unauthorized seat covers. Doing so may increase injury risk.

Side airbags are located in the outer seat backrests of the front seats. They inflate in certain side impacts or rollover events to provide additional protection.

  • Side airbag labels indicating system presence.
  • Seat-mounted side airbags.
  • Crash sensors with readiness indicator.

How the Safety Canopy Works

Warning: Keep deployment areas clear. Do not lean your head against doors or obstruct airbag paths.

The Safety Canopy deploys during significant side impacts or rollover conditions. It inflates between occupants and side windows to enhance protection.

  • Curtain airbags mounted above windows.
  • Flexible headliner deployment design.
  • Crash sensors and monitoring system.

Airbag Precautions

Important Safety Warnings:
  • Always wear seatbelts properly.
  • Secure children in rear seating positions whenever possible.
  • Keep airbag areas unobstructed.
  • Never place rear-facing child restraints in front of active airbags.
  • Do not modify or service airbag components.

Proper Seating Position

Maintain at least 10 inches (25 cm) distance between your chest and the steering airbag. Sit upright, centered in the seat, with feet on the floor.

Children and Airbags

Warning: Children must always be properly restrained in rear seating positions when possible.

Rear seating positions provide greater safety for children. Follow child restraint manufacturer instructions carefully.

Front Passenger Sensing System

This system detects occupant presence and determines whether the passenger airbag should be enabled or disabled.

  • Disables airbag if seat is empty or child restraint is detected.
  • Uses seat sensors to evaluate occupant weight and position.

If the status indicator seems incorrect, ensure no objects interfere with the seat or sensors.

Passenger Sensing Indicators

Occupant Status Indicator Airbag State
Empty Off Lamp Illuminated Disabled
Child Off Lamp Illuminated Disabled
Adult On Lamp Illuminated Enabled

Crash Sensors and Airbag Indicator

Crash sensors activate safety devices such as airbags, pretensioners, and steering column systems. A dashboard indicator monitors readiness.

  • Flashing or constant warning lights indicate system faults.
  • Immediate service is required if warning tones or lights appear.

Disposing of Airbags

Airbags must be disposed of by qualified service personnel. Contact an authorized dealer.
