Mini Cooper

Lights

This chapter describes all standard, country-specific, and optional features offered with the series. It also includes safety-related functions. Applicable laws and regulations must be observed when using these systems.

Overview

Switches in the Vehicle

The light switch element is located next to the steering wheel.

Symbol Function
Rear fog light Turns on rear fog lights
Front fog lights Turns on front fog lights
Automatic headlight control Automatically switches headlights on/off based on ambient brightness
Cornering light Illuminates inside of curves when turning below a certain speed
Lights off Turns all lights off
Daytime running lights Lights that illuminate during driving
Parking lights Illuminates vehicle on all sides
Low beams Illuminates the road when driving
Instrument lighting Controls brightness of instrument panel

Parking Lights, Low Beams and Roadside Parking Lights

General Information

If the driver's door is opened when the ignition is off, the exterior lighting is automatically switched off.

Parking Lights

Position of switch: parking lights symbol

  • Illuminates vehicle on all sides.
  • Do not use for extended periods to avoid battery discharge.
  • For one-sided roadside parking lights, refer to page 110.
Low Beams

Position of switch: low beams symbol

Lights up when ignition is on.

Canada: Roadside Parking Light

Vehicle can be illuminated on one side.

  • Switch on: press lever up/down past resistance point for ~2 seconds.
  • Switch off: briefly press lever in opposite direction.

Welcome Lights and Headlight Courtesy Delay Feature

Welcome Lights

Lights briefly illuminate when vehicle is unlocked, depending on equipment and ambient brightness.

  1. Via CID: "Settings" → "Lighting" → "Welcome lights"

Settings are stored for the driver profile currently used.

Headlight Courtesy Delay Feature

Low beams stay lit briefly after vehicle radio-ready state is switched off.

  1. Via CID: "Settings" → "Lighting" → "Pathway lighting:" → Set duration

Settings are stored for the driver profile currently used.

Automatic Headlight Control

Low beams switch on/off automatically based on ambient brightness.

  • Can be triggered in tunnels, twilight, or precipitation.
  • Blue sky with low sun may trigger lights.

Indicator light in instrument cluster shows low beams status.

Note: Sensors cannot detect fog or hazy weather. Use personal judgment and switch lights on manually if necessary.

Daytime Running Lights

  • Position of switch: daytime running lights symbol
  • Lights up when ignition is on. Parking lights remain after ignition off.
  1. Via CID: "Settings" → "Lighting" → "Daytime running lamps"

Settings stored for remote control in use. Some countries may mandate daytime running lights.

Cornering Light

Automatically lights the inside of curves below a certain speed depending on steering angle or turn signals.

Adaptive Headlight Range Control

Compensates for acceleration/braking to avoid blinding oncoming traffic and optimize roadway illumination.

High-beam Assistant

Concept

Detects traffic and automatically switches high beams on/off depending on traffic situation.

Activating/Deactivating
  1. Press and hold button on signal lever (position varies by equipment)

Blue indicator in cluster illuminates when system activates. High-beam Assistant deactivates if manually switching high beams. Reactivate via lever button.

System Limits
  • Does not replace personal judgment in adverse weather (fog, heavy rain).
  • May not detect poorly-lit road users, cross traffic, or animals.
  • Performance reduced in tight curves, hills, depressions, reflective surfaces.

Fog Lights

Front Fog Lights
  • Work alongside low beams for wider illumination.
  • Low beams must be on before switching fog lights.
  • Press button to toggle. Green indicator lights when active.
Rear Fog Light
  • Low beams or front fog lights must be on before switching rear fog light.
  • Press button to toggle. Yellow indicator lights when active.

Instrument Lighting

  • Parking lights or low beams must be on to adjust brightness.
  • Adjust brightness via thumbwheel.

Interior Lights

Automatic control depending on equipment. Includes footwell, entry, and courtesy lights.

  • Thumbwheel also controls some instrument lighting.
Overview
  1. Interior lights
  2. Reading lights
  3. Ambient light
Switching Interior Lights On/Off

Press button. To switch off permanently, press and hold for ~3 seconds.

Reading Lights

Press button located in front near interior light to switch manually.

Ambient Light

Lighting can be adjusted depending on equipment version.

  1. Via CID: "Settings" → "Lighting" → "Ambient:"

Settings are stored for the driver profile in use.

Changing Color
  • Push switch forward/back for manual color change.
  • Hold switch ~3 seconds for automatic color cycle; push again to end.
Setting Brightness
  1. Via CID: "Settings" → "Lighting" → "Brightness:"
  2. Adjust brightness via thumbwheel or Control Display.
