Airbags

Types of Airbags

  1. Front airbag, driver
  2. Front airbag, front passenger
  3. Head airbag
  4. Side airbag
  5. Knee airbag

Front Airbags

Help protect the driver and front passenger by responding to frontal impacts where seat belts alone are insufficient.

Side Airbag

Supports the side of the body in chest and lap areas during lateral impacts.

Head Airbag

Supports the head during lateral impacts.

Ejection Mitigation

Reduces the likelihood of occupants being ejected through side windows during rollovers or side impacts.

Knee Airbag

Supports the legs in a frontal impact.

Protective Action

Airbags are not triggered in every impact, e.g., less severe accidents or rear-end collisions.

Warning: Incorrect seat position or impaired airbag deployment areas reduce protection and may cause injury. Follow these guidelines:
  • Keep a safe distance from airbags.
  • Hold steering wheel at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock.
  • Front passenger must keep feet on floor; no support on dashboard.
  • Keep heads away from side airbags.
  • No additional persons, animals, or objects between airbags and occupants.
  • Do not attach items to dashboard or windshield near airbags.
  • Do not cover or modify airbag panels or seat areas with integrated airbags.
  • Do not hang clothes on backrests or modify airbag wiring/components.

Functional Readiness of Airbag System

Warning: Components can be hot after deployment. Do not touch. Improper work may cause malfunction or unintentional triggering. Only qualified service centers should check or repair the system.

Correct Function

Warning light in the instrument cluster briefly illuminates when ignition is on, indicating operational readiness.

Airbag System Malfunction

  • Warning light does not illuminate when ignition is on.
  • Warning light stays on continuously.

Automatic Deactivation of Front Passenger Airbags

The system detects occupancy and activates/deactivates front, knee, and side airbags accordingly.

Warning: Ensure full seat cushion usage and feet on floor for proper airbag function. Otherwise, there is a risk of injury or death.

Malfunction of Automatic Deactivation System

If airbags deactivate incorrectly due to seating position:

  • Indicator light shows deactivation.
  • Adjust seating position to reactivate airbags or move the occupant to the rear seat.
  • Do not place covers, cushions, or electronic devices on front passenger seat unless approved.

Indicator Light for Front-Seat Passenger Airbags

Indicates whether front passenger airbags are activated or deactivated:

  • Lights up when a child is seated in a child restraint system or seat is empty → airbags deactivated.
  • Does not light up when a correctly seated person is detected → airbags activated.

Strength of Driver and Passenger Airbag

Explosive power depends on seat positions. Calibrate front seats if Check Control messages appear:

  1. Move seat fully forward.
  2. Move forward again briefly.
  3. Readjust to desired position. Message disappears upon completion.

Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)

Concept

Monitors inflation pressure in four mounted tires and warns of significant pressure loss.

General Information

Sensors in tire valves measure tire pressure and temperature. Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure page for more info.

Functional Requirements

  • After tire/wheel replacement, perform reset with correct pressure.
  • After adjusting pressure, perform reset.
  • Wheels must have TPM electronics.

Status Display

Check status on Control Display via CID: "Vehicle Info" → "Vehicle Status" → "Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM)".

Tire Conditions

Status Meaning
All wheels green System active, no significant pressure loss
1-4 yellow wheels Flat tire or major pressure drop detected
Gray wheels Cannot identify pressure loss (malfunction, reset in progress)

Resetting the System

  1. Via CID: "Vehicle Info" → "Vehicle Status" → "Perform Reset".
  2. Start engine, do not drive off.
  3. Reset tire pressure using "Perform Reset".
  4. Drive above 30 km/h / 19 mph for reference values to be accepted.

Messages & Warnings

Warning: Low or missing tire pressure affects handling, braking, and steering. Run-flat tires maintain limited stability. Do not continue driving with normal tires if underinflated.
Low Tire Inflation Pressure
  • Check tire pressure and reset system.
Significant Loss of Tire Pressure
  • Reduce speed, stop safely.
  • Check tires (normal or run-flat).
  • Do not exceed 80 km/h / 50 mph on damaged tires.

Vehicle Handling with Damaged Tires

  • May swerve off course.
  • Longer braking distances.
  • Changed self-steering properties.
  • Drive cautiously; avoid abrupt maneuvers or obstacles.

Final Tire Failure

Vibrations or loud noises indicate final failure. Reduce speed and stop. Do not continue driving. Contact dealer/service center.

System Limits

  • Pressure depends on tire temperature; driving or sun exposure increases pressure.
  • Sudden tire damage may not be indicated.
  • Failure to reset TPM causes inaccurate readings.
  • Malfunctions or interference may prevent correct function.
Declaration: Check all tires monthly and inflate according to vehicle placard. TPMS tells you if one or more tires is low.
