Engine compartment

Vehicle features and options

This chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with the series. Some features may not be available depending on options or country versions. Safety-related functions must always comply with applicable laws and regulations.

Important features in the engine compartment

  1. Filler neck for washer fluid
  2. Vehicle identification number
  3. Oil filler neck
  4. Jump-starting, positive terminal
  5. Jump-starting, negative terminal
  6. Coolant reservoir

Hood

Safety information

WARNING: Improperly executed work in the engine compartment can damage vehicle components and impair functions. Work should be performed by a dealer’s service center or qualified repair shop.

WARNING: The engine compartment contains moving components, e.g., radiator fan, which can move even when the vehicle is off. Keep hands, hair, and clothing clear.

WARNING: Protruding parts, such as locking hooks, can cause injury. Keep clear when the hood is open.

WARNING: An incorrectly locked hood may open while driving. Stop and close properly.

WARNING: Hands can be jammed when opening or closing the hood. Ensure the movement area is clear.

NOTE: Folded wipers may jam when opening the hood. Ensure wipers are down before opening.

NOTE: When closing the hood, it must engage on both sides. Pressing again can damage it. Open and close energetically instead.

Opening the hood

  1. Pull lever, arrow 1. The hood is unlocked.
  2. After releasing lever, pull lever again, arrow 2. Hood can be opened.

Indicator/warning lights

When the hood is opened, a Check Control message is displayed.

Closing the hood

Let the hood fall from approx. 40 cm. It must engage on both sides.

Engine oil

General information

Engine oil consumption depends on driving style and conditions. Regularly check engine oil level after refueling. Consumption may increase due to:

  • Sporty driving
  • Engine break-in
  • Engine idling
  • Use of unsuitable engine oils

Check Control messages appear depending on engine oil level.

Safety information

NOTE: Too low engine oil causes engine damage. Immediately add oil.

NOTE: Too much engine oil can damage the engine or catalytic converter. Correct if necessary via a dealer or qualified service center.

Electronic oil measurement

General information

Two measurement principles:

  • Monitoring
  • Detailed measurement

Frequent short trips or aggressive driving require regular detailed measurements.

Monitoring

The engine oil level is monitored electronically while driving. If outside permissible range, a Check Control message is displayed. Current values are available after ~30 minutes of normal driving.

Displaying the engine oil level

  1. Via Central Information Display (CID): "Vehicle info"
  2. "Vehicle status"
  3. "Engine oil level"

System limits

If short trips or dynamic driving prevent calculation, last sufficiently long measurement is displayed.

Detailed measurement

Concept: Engine oil level is checked when stationary and displayed via a scale. Idle speed may slightly increase during measurement.

Requirements:

  • Vehicle parked horizontally
  • Manual: neutral, pedals not pressed
  • Steptronic: N or P, accelerator not pressed
  • Engine running and at operating temperature

Performing a detailed measurement

  1. Via CID: "Vehicle info"
  2. "Vehicle status"
  3. "Measure engine oil level"
  4. "Start measurement"

Adding engine oil

General information

Only add oil when indicated in the instrument cluster. Use only suitable engine oil types. Park vehicle safely and switch off ignition. Avoid overfilling.

Safety information

WARNING: Operating materials can be harmful. Follow container instructions and avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. Store out of reach of children.

NOTE: Low engine oil causes damage; add immediately.

NOTE: Too much oil can damage engine or catalytic converter. Correct via dealer or qualified service center if overfilled.

Overview

The oil filler neck is located in the engine compartment.

Adding engine oil

  1. Open the hood
  2. Turn lid counterclockwise
  3. Add engine oil
  4. Close cap

Engine oil types to add

NOTE: Oil additives may damage the engine. Do not use. Ensure correct oil rating to prevent malfunctions or damage.

Suitable engine oil types

Add oils meeting the following standards:

  • Gasoline engine: BMW Longlife-01 FE, BMW Longlife-14 FE+

More information can be requested from a dealer or qualified service center.

Alternative engine oil types

If suitable oil unavailable, up to 1 US quart/liter of oil meeting the following standards may be used:

  • Gasoline engine: BMW Longlife-01, API SL/SM/SN

Viscosity grades

Gasoline engines: SAE 0W-30 or SAE 0W-20 (SAE 0W-20 only for specific engines). Refer to label in engine compartment.

Engine oil change

NOTE: Delayed oil changes can increase engine wear and cause damage. Have oil changed by dealer or qualified service center according to service schedule.
