Vehicle Features and Options
This chapter describes all standard, country-specific, and optional features offered with the series. It also describes features that may not be available in your vehicle, e.g., due to selected options or country versions. This also applies to safety-related functions and systems. When using these functions and systems, applicable laws and regulations must be observed.
Instrument Cluster Overview
- Tachometer
- Indicator/warning lights
- Speedometer
- Fuel gauge
- Display/reset miles
- Electronic displays
Electronic Displays
- Driver assistance systems (Messages, e.g., Check Control; Time; External temperature; Selection lists; Total miles/trip odometer; Onboard Computer)
- Selector lever position, Gear shift indicator
- MINI Driving Modes switch status
Check Control
Concept: The Check Control system monitors functions in the vehicle and notifies you of malfunctions in the monitored systems.
General Information
A Check Control message is displayed as a combination of indicator/warning lights and SMS text messages in the instrument cluster and Head-up Display. An acoustic signal may also be output, and SMS text may appear on the Control Display.
Indicator/Warning Lights
General Information: The indicator/warning lights can illuminate in various combinations and colors. Several lights are checked for proper functioning and light up temporarily when the engine is started or ignition is switched on.
Red Lights
- Safety Belt Reminder: Indicator flashes or illuminates if driver or passenger belt is not buckled. Can also activate if objects are on the passenger seat. Ensure safety belts are positioned correctly.
- Airbag System: Airbag and belt tensioner not working. Have the vehicle checked immediately by a qualified service center.
- Parking Brake: Parking brake is set. Release it if necessary.
- Approach Control Warning: Indicator illuminates for advance warning (e.g., potential collision). Flashes for acute warnings requiring braking or evasive action.
- Person Warning: If a collision with a person is imminent, the symbol lights up and a signal sounds.
Orange Lights
- Active Cruise Control: Number bars show selected distance from vehicle ahead. Camera-based cruise control applies brakes if conditions are not adequate.
Yellow Lights
- Anti-lock Braking System (ABS): Braking force boost may not work. Avoid abrupt braking; have system checked immediately if malfunction occurs.
- DSC (Dynamic Stability Control): Flashes: DSC controls drive and braking forces. Illuminated: DSC malfunction; check with service center.
- DSC/DTC Activated: DSC deactivated or DTC active. See pages 134–135.
- Flat Tire Monitor (FTM): Signals tire pressure loss. Reduce speed and stop cautiously.
- Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM): Illuminated: low tire pressure or flat tire. Flashes then lights continuously: no flat tire detected. Reset or service if needed.
- Steering System: System may not work. Service immediately if malfunctioning.
- Emissions: Lights up: emissions deteriorating. Flashes: excessive engine misfire; reduce speed and service immediately.
- Socket for Onboard Diagnosis: Refer to page 232.
- Rear Fog Light: Switched on. See page 112.
Green Lights
- Turn Signal: Indicator flashes when turn signal is on; rapid flashing indicates bulb failure.
- Parking Lights / Headlights: Switched on. See page 109.
- Front Fog Lights: Switched on. See page 112.
- High-beam Assistant: Automatically switches high beams depending on traffic. See page 111.
- Cruise Control: Maintains set speed via steering wheel controls.
Blue Lights
- High Beams: Switched on. See page 75.
Hiding Check Control Messages
- Continuous Display: Some messages display continuously until malfunction is resolved. Can be hidden approx. 8 seconds.
- Temporary Display: Some messages hide automatically after ~20 seconds. Stored messages can be displayed later.
- Displaying Stored Messages via CID:
- "Vehicle info"
- "Vehicle status"
- "Check Control"
- Select the SMS text message
Display Check Control
At least one Check Control message is displayed or stored. SMS text messages explain the meaning of indicator/warning lights. Supplementary SMS text provides additional info on errors or required actions.
Fuel Gauge
Arrow beside fuel pump symbol shows which side the fuel filler flap is on. Vehicle tilt may cause display variations. Yellow light illuminates when fuel reserve is reached. Refueling info: page 198.
Tachometer
Avoid engine speeds in the red warning field; fuel supply is reduced to protect engine.
Odometer and Trip Odometer
Concept: Total kilometers driven and since last reset are displayed.
Reset Trip Odometer: Press the button. Odometer displays when ignition is off; trip odometer resets when ignition is on.
External Temperature
If indicator drops to +3 ℃ / +37 ℉, a signal sounds and Check Control message is displayed. Increased risk of ice on roads.
WARNING: Even above +3 ℃ / +37 ℉ there may be icy roads, e.g., bridges or shaded areas. Modify driving style accordingly.
Time
Time is displayed in the instrument cluster and can be set via the Central Information Display (CID).
