Coolant

Vehicle features and options

This chapter describes all standard, country-specific and optional features offered with the series. Some features may not be available depending on options or country versions. Safety-related functions must always comply with applicable laws and regulations.

General information

Coolant consists of water and additives. Not all commercially available additives are suitable. Information about suitable additives is available from a dealer or qualified service center.

Safety information

WARNING: With the engine hot and cooling system open, coolant can escape and scald. Only open the cooling system when engine is cooled down.

WARNING: Additives are harmful. Incorrect additives can damage the engine. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing. Use only suitable additives.

Coolant level

Overview

The coolant reservoir is located in the engine compartment. Open the hood before checking.

Checking

Yellow Min and Max marks indicate coolant level.

  1. Let the engine cool.
  2. Turn lid slightly counterclockwise to release pressure, then open.
  3. Open the coolant reservoir lid.
  4. The coolant level is correct if it lies between the minimum and maximum marks.
Adding
  1. Let the engine cool.
  2. Turn lid slightly counterclockwise to release pressure, then open.
  3. If coolant is low, slowly add up to the specified level; do not overfill.
  4. Close the cap.
  5. Have the cause of coolant loss eliminated as soon as possible.
Disposal

Comply with environmental protection regulations when disposing of coolant and additives.

Maintenance

Vehicle features and options

All standard, country-specific, and optional features are described here. Availability may vary by options and country version.

MINI maintenance system

The system indicates required maintenance measures to maintain safety and operational reliability. Scopes and intervals may vary by country version. Replacement work, spare parts, fuels, lubricants, and wear materials are calculated separately. Consult a dealer or qualified service center for details.

Condition Based Service (CBS)

Sensors and algorithms calculate maintenance needs based on driving conditions. The system adapts maintenance according to your user profile.

General information

Service requirements can be displayed on the Control Display. Data is stored in the remote control and read by the dealer for optimized maintenance planning.

Storage periods

Battery disconnection periods are not accounted for. Have a dealer update time-dependent maintenance procedures if this occurs.

Service and Warranty Information Booklet

Consult the US or Canadian Service and Warranty Booklet for additional information on service requirements. Maintenance should be performed by a dealer or qualified service center, and records retained.

Socket for OBD Onboard Diagnosis

Safety information

NOTE: The OBD socket is intended for specialized equipment to check emissions. Improper use can cause malfunctions and risks. Access should be limited to trained personnel.

Position

The OBD socket is on the driver's side for checking primary emissions components.

Emissions
  • Warning light on: emissions deteriorating, check vehicle.
  • Warning light flashing: excessive misfiring, reduce speed and have system checked immediately.

Replacing components

Onboard vehicle tool kit

Depending on equipment, located on right under cargo floor panel or in a bag. Secure after use.

Wiper blade replacement

Safety information

NOTE: Hold the wiper firmly when changing blades. Do not operate wipers without blades installed.

NOTE: Folded wipers can jam when hood is opened. Ensure blades are folded down.

Front wiper blades
  1. Fold up wiper arms.
  2. Hold wiper arm firmly.
  3. Open wiper blade lock.
  4. Pull blade down and free from holder.
  5. Insert and latch new blade in reverse order.
  6. Fold down wiper arm.
Rear wiper blade
  1. Fold up wiper arm and hold firmly.
  2. Turn wiper blade all the way back.
  3. Push blade out of fastening.
  4. Insert new blade in reverse order; it must engage audibly.
  5. Fold down wiper arm.

Light/bulb replacement

General information

Lights and bulbs are essential for vehicle safety. Dealer service recommended if unfamiliar. Spare light box available from dealer.

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs)

Some equipment uses LEDs behind a cover, designated Class 1 LEDs. Follow safety instructions.

Safety information

WARNING: Bulbs can be hot. Only change when cooled.

WARNING: Working on live lighting systems can cause short circuits. Switch off lights first.

NOTE: Dirty bulbs have reduced life. Do not touch with bare hands; use cloth or base.

WARNING: LED brightness can damage eyes. Do not look directly into lights or remove LED covers.

Headlight glass

Condensation may form but evaporates quickly. Headlight glass does not need replacement unless abnormal moisture persists.

Headlight setting

Adjustments can be affected by changing bulbs. Have dealer check after adjustment.
