Intelligent Safety
Concept
Intelligent Safety enables central operation of the driver assistance system. The systems can help prevent an imminent collision.
- Approach control warning with City light braking function
- Person warning with City light braking function
Warning: The system does not relieve from personal responsibility to assess visibility and traffic. Adjust driving style and actively intervene where appropriate.
Warning: Indicators and warnings may not be output or may be output too late or incorrectly due to system limits.
Warning: Functions can malfunction during tow-starting/towing with Intelligent Safety systems activated. Switch all systems off before towing.
Button in the Vehicle
Intelligent Safety button:
- Press briefly: Display menu, systems can be switched off individually. LED shows status (orange/off).
- Press again: All systems switch on, LED lights green.
- Hold down: All systems switch off, LED goes out.
Approach Control Warning with City Light Braking Function
The system helps prevent accidents or reduce collision speed. It warns before an imminent collision and may apply limited automatic braking.
- Camera at base of interior mirror controls the system.
- Available even if cruise control is deactivated.
- Delays warnings/braking if vehicle intentionally approaches another to avoid false reactions.
General Information
Warnings are issued at speeds from approx. 3 mph/5 km/h. Braking kicks in up to 35 mph/60 km/h. Detection is based on objects in range.
Warning: System limits may prevent warnings or braking in time. Adjust driving style and actively intervene.
Display and Warnings
| Symbol |
Measure |
| Red symbol lights up |
Prewarning: brake and increase distance |
| Red symbol flashes + acoustic signal |
Acute warning: brake and take evasive action if necessary |
Braking Intervention
During warnings, maximum braking force is applied. Vehicle may stop completely at low speeds. For manual transmission, engine may shut down during full stop. Intervention only occurs if stability is not restricted.
The driver can cancel intervention by accelerating or steering actively.
Person Warning with City Light Braking Function
The system detects pedestrians and warns with braking assistance at city speeds (6–35 mph / 10–60 km/h).
Detection Range
- Central area directly in front of vehicle
- Expanded area to right/left of central area
- Warning issued if pedestrian is in central area, or moving toward it from expanded area
Warning: System limits may prevent detection of pedestrians. Always watch traffic and adjust driving.
Functional Limitations
- Heavy fog, wet conditions, or snowfall
- Tight curves
- Dirty/obstructed windshield or camera
- Deactivated stability control (DSC OFF)
- First 10 seconds after engine start via Start/Stop
- Camera calibration after delivery
- Blinding effects from oncoming light or low sun
- Dark conditions outside
Brake Force Display
Additional brake lights indicate emergency braking to traffic behind, reducing rear-end collision risk.
- Normal braking: brake lights illuminate
- Heavy braking: flashers additionally light up
Alertness Assistant
Detects decreasing alertness or fatigue during long trips and recommends breaks.
Warning: System does not replace personal responsibility for assessing fatigue. Ensure driver is rested and alert.
Function
- Automatically active at engine start
- Monitors driving behavior and conditions
- Active above approx. 43 mph / 70 km/h
Break Recommendation
If driver fatigue is detected, a message is displayed once on the Control Display recommending a break.
