Starting the Engine
Before starting the engine, adjust the seat, interior rear view mirrors, door mirrors, and fasten the seat belt correctly. Never press the accelerator pedal when starting the engine. Messages on the instrument panel may indicate the starting procedure.
Procedure for Petrol Versions
- Engage the electric parking brake and set the gear lever to P (Park) or N (Neutral).
- Fully depress the brake pedal without touching the accelerator.
- Briefly press the ignition button.
- If the engine does not start within a few seconds, repeat the procedure. Contact an Alfa Romeo Dealership if the problem persists.
Procedure for Diesel Versions
- Engage the parking brake and set the gear lever to P (Park) or N (Neutral).
- Fully depress the brake pedal without touching the accelerator.
- Briefly press the ignition button.
- If the engine does not start within a few seconds, repeat the procedure. Contact an Alfa Romeo Dealership if the problem persists.
Starting After Long Inactivity
If the vehicle has not been started or driven for at least 35 days:
- Briefly press the ignition button.
- If the engine does not start, wait 5 seconds, let the starter cool down, then repeat.
- If the engine does not start after 8 attempts, let the starter cool for at least 10 seconds, then repeat.
- If problems persist, contact an Alfa Romeo Dealership.
Warning: Very difficult starting after prolonged inactivity may indicate a partially flat battery. Refer to "Emergency Starting".
Engine Starting Failure
- Do not pour fuel or flammable fluid into the throttle body air intake.
- Do not start the engine by towing or pushing the vehicle.
- If the battery is flat, jump-start using proper cables as per "Emergency Starting".
- If the electronic key battery is flat, follow "Starting with Flat Key Battery".
Warming Up the Engine
- Drive off slowly, letting the engine run at medium revs. Avoid abrupt acceleration.
- Do not demand full performance immediately.
- Wait until the digital engine coolant temperature indicator starts moving.
Stopping the Engine
- Park the vehicle in a safe position.
- Engage P (Park) mode.
- With engine idling, press the start/stop button.
Warning: Do not leave the ignition in ON when the engine is off. Accessories remain powered for ~3 minutes after stopping.
Vehicles with Keyless Start: If speed is above 5 mph (8 km/h), hold the ignition button or press 3 times to stop the engine. Engine can be taken away with the key without switching off if doors are open.
Turbo Version Cooling
After heavy use, keep the engine idling 3–5 minutes to allow oil and coolant to dissipate heat, especially for the turbocharger.
Warnings
- Do not run the engine in enclosed areas; exhaust gases are toxic.
- Electro-hydraulic brake system is inactive until engine starts; brake pedal travel will be longer initially.
- Do not start the engine by pushing, towing, or driving downhill.
Engine Run-in Recommendations (2.0 T4 MAir & 2.9 V6)
First 500 miles (800 km) of engine operation must be run-in.
- Oil and fuel consumption may be higher than usual during run-in; this is normal.
- Check and top up engine oil periodically during run-in.
Driving Behaviour During Run-in
0–100 miles (0–160 km):
- Do not idle engine for long periods.
- Gradually press throttle, max halfway.
- Avoid hard braking.
- Keep engine under 3500 rpm, speed below 55 mph (90 km/h).
100–300 miles (160–500 km):
