Occupant Protection Systems

The following protection systems are among the most important safety equipment of the car:

  • Seat belts
  • SBA (Seat Belt Alert) system
  • Head restraints
  • Child restraint systems
  • Front airbags and side bags

Read the following information carefully. Proper use of protection systems guarantees the maximum safety for the driver and passengers. For head restraint adjustment, see the "Head restraints" paragraph in the "Knowing your car" chapter.

Seat Belts

All seat belts have three anchor points and a retractor. The reel mechanism locks in the event of sharp braking or collision, allowing the belt to adapt to the occupant's body. In an accident, the belt locks to reduce injury risk.

The driver must ensure all occupants comply with local seat belt laws. Always fasten seat belts before driving.

Using the Seat Belts

Wear the chest straight against the backrest. Fasten the seat belt by inserting the tongue into the buckle until it clicks. Fig. 128

To unfasten, press the button and guide the belt to rewind. Retractor may lock on steep slopes or during sudden braking.

Rear seat belts: the central rear belt has a double buckle. Fasten and release as shown. Figs. 129-130

Seat Belt Alert (SBA) System

The system warns unfastened belts with visual (instrument panel lights/icons) and acoustic alerts.

Front Seat Belt Warning Light

Warning light comes on briefly when ignition is ON. At standstill, unfastened belts keep the light fixed. Above 5 mph (8 km/h), flashing light and acoustic alert for ~105 seconds. Reversing deactivates the acoustic signal temporarily. Fig. 131

Rear Seat Belt Icons

Displayed on the instrument panel for ~30 seconds after ignition ON or door closing. Icons indicate rear left, center (where provided), and right belts. Red = unfastened, green = fastened. Acoustic warning (3 beeps) triggers for unfastened belts. Fig. 132

Pretensioners and Load Limiters

Front and rear lateral seat belts have pretensioners that retract belts during strong frontal impact. Activation is visible by belt movement or shortening of metal cable. A slight smoke may appear during activation. Pretensioners do not require maintenance.

Load limiters control force on chest and shoulders during collision.

General Seat Belt Warnings

  • Always fasten belts before driving.
  • Pregnant women must wear belts low on pelvis, over torso and pelvis. Adjust seat/steering for comfort and safety. Fig. 133-134
  • Seat belts must not be twisted and each belt is for one person only. Never place a child on a passenger’s lap with a single belt. Fig. 135
  • Check belts regularly; replace after accident or pretensioner deployment.
  • Pretensioners are single-use; only qualified technicians may service them.
  • Keep backrest upright and ensure seat belt fits chest and pelvis closely.

Child Restraint Systems

All occupants, including children, must use proper restraint systems. Children below 1.50 m (4.9 ft) up to 12 years must sit in rear seats with suitable child restraint systems. Rear seats offer greater safety for children.

Use rear-facing seats for infants and young children (up to 3-4 years). Restraint choice depends on child weight and size, secured via seat belts or ISOFIX/i-Size anchors. Child restraints must have type-approval labels.

Universal Child Restraints with Seatbelts

Type-approved per ECE R44 standard. Fit according to instructions provided with the seat restraint system.

  • Group 0 & 0+ (up to 13 kg / 28.7 lb): rear-facing infant seats. Fig. 136
  • Group 1 (9-18 kg / 20-40 lb): forward-facing seats. Fig. 137
  • Group 2 (15-25 kg / 33-55 lb): seat belts used with child positioning devices. Fig. 138
  • Group 3 (22-36 kg / 48.5-79.4 lb): restraining devices for proper seat belt alignment. Fig. 139
  • Children over 1.50 m wear seat belts like adults.

Warnings for Child Seats

  • Never install rear-facing child seats on front passenger with active airbag—risk of fatal injury.
  • Always carry children in rear seats when possible.
  • Deactivate passenger airbag when rear-facing ch
