ENGINE COMPARTMENT

Engine Components

1. Engine oil filler
2. Primary engine cooling reservoir plug
3. Brake fluid reservoir cap access cover
4. Windscreen/headlights washer fluid reservoir plug
5. Secondary engine cooling reservoir plug
6. Engine oil dipstick

Warnings

• 195) Never smoke while working in the engine compartment: gas and inflammable vapours may be present, risk of fire.
• 196) Be careful when working near a hot engine: risk of burns. Do not get too close to the radiator cooling fan; scarves, ties, or loose clothing may be pulled by moving parts.

Important

• Be careful not to confuse different types of fluids while topping up. Using the wrong fluid may severely damage your vehicle.

ENGINE OIL

Checking Engine Oil

• 197–77) Check the oil level before long journeys.
• Engine oil level is shown on the instrument panel or Connect system display.
• Oil level is indicated using 6 segments: 1 = MIN, 6 = MAX.
• If the first red mark is reached, add oil through the filler:

• If the "Insufficient engine oil level" symbol appears, top up 1 litre immediately.
• Use dipstick to check oil level after top-up; never exceed MAX line.
• Check with engine warm (~90°C / 198°F) and wait 5 minutes after stopping.

Manual Gearbox: Checking Oil Level (2.9 V6)

Check oil with dipstick on level ground: clean, reinsert, extract, and verify level is between MIN and MAX.

Oil Level Update on Display (2.9 V6)

1. Run engine ~5 minutes (90°C), then stop.
2. Wait 5 minutes, turn ignition ON (do not start engine), wait a few seconds.
3. If not updated, repeat procedure once; if still not updated, contact Alfa Romeo Dealership.

2.2 JTD Engine

1. Run engine until 3rd oil temperature notch lights, then stop.
2. Wait 3 minutes, turn ignition ON (do not start engine) for 20 seconds.

2.0 T4 MAir Engine

1. Run engine ~5 minutes (~80°C), stop.
2. Restart engine, idle ~2 minutes.

Engine Oil Consumption

Maximum consumption ~0.88 lb (400 g) every 1000 km. Stable consumption after first 5000–6000 km.

ENGINE COOLANT

If low, unscrew reservoir cap and add fluid specified in "Technical Specifications".
