Citroen Berlingo

Gearbox and steering wheel

To change gear easily, always depress the clutch pedal fully.

To prevent the mat from becoming caught under the pedal:

  • Ensure that the mat is positioned and secured correctly on the floor.
  • Never fit one mat on top of another.

When driving, avoid leaving your hand on the gear knob as even slight force may wear the internal components of the gearbox over time.

Changing into 5th or 6th Gear

To engage the gear, move the gear lever fully to the right. In the 6-speed configuration, raise the collar under the gear knob to engage reverse gear.

Steering Wheel Adjustment

When the vehicle is stationary, release the steering wheel adjustment mechanism by pulling the lever. Adjust the steering wheel for height and reach, then lock the mechanism by pushing the lever fully forward. The lever should be moved slowly to reduce noise.

Engaging Reverse Gear

Wait until the vehicle has come to a complete stop before engaging reverse gear.

Gear Shift Indicator

This system reduces fuel consumption by recommending the most appropriate gear.

Operation: Depending on the driving situation and your vehicle's equipment, the system may advise you to skip one or more gears. Gear recommendations are advisory only; the driver remains responsible for safety and gear choice. The system cannot be deactivated and adapts to driving conditions and driver demands.

  • The system never suggests engaging first gear or reverse gear.
  • Information appears on the instrument panel in the form of an arrow.
Starting the Engine
  • Gear selector must be in position N.
  • Press firmly on the brake pedal.
  • Operate the starter.
  • When the engine is running, place the gear selector on R, A, or M as desired.
  • Release the brake pedal and accelerate.
  • If the selector is not in N and/or brake pedal is not pressed, the engine will not start.
Reverse Gear

Move the gear selector to R. Only select reverse when the vehicle is stationary.

Neutral

Move the gear selector to N. Do not select this while the vehicle is moving.

  • Automatic mode: gear selector in A.
  • Manual mode: gear selector in M.
  • Brake pedal must be pressed to exit N for safety.
Mode Selection

Manual Mode: Move the gear selector to M.

Automatic Mode: Move the gear selector to A. The gearbox operates automatically, selecting the best gear based on driving style, road profile, and fuel efficiency.

Vehicle Stationary

During prolonged stops, the gearbox automatically changes to neutral N. Before stopping the engine, put the selector in N and apply the parking brake. Ensure the parking brake warning lamp is on.

Acceleration & Changing Gear
  • For optimum acceleration, press the pedal firmly past the resistance point.
  • High engine speeds may require the electronic gearbox control paddle for gear changes.
  • Pull "+" paddle to change up, "-" paddle to change down.
  • Gearbox may change down automatically if speed reduces.
  • Gear changes accepted only if engine speed allows.

Stop & Start System

The Stop & Start system temporarily stops the engine during traffic stops (STOP mode) and restarts it automatically (START mode) when moving off. It reduces fuel consumption, emissions, and noise.

Going into Engine STOP Mode

The "ECO" warning lamp comes on and the engine goes into standby:

  • Manual gearbox: speeds below 12 mph (20 km/h), gear in neutral, clutch released.
  • 6-speed electronic gearbox: speeds below 5 mph (8 km/h), brake pressed or gear in N.

A time counter calculates the sum of STOP periods during a journey and resets with each ignition start.

STOP mode is unavailable for a few seconds after coming out of reverse gear. It does not affect braking or power steering. Never refuel while in STOP mode; switch off the ignition first.

Special Cases: STOP Mode Unavailable
  • Driver's door open.
  • Driver's seat belt not fastened.
  • Vehicle has not exceeded 6 mph (10 km/h) since last engine start.
  • Engine needed for passenger comfort, demisting, or other conditions (battery, temperature, braking assistance).

The "ECO" warning lamp may flash briefly in these cases; this is normal.

Going into Engine START Mode

The "ECO" warning lamp goes off and the engine starts:

  • Manual gearbox: fully depress the clutch pedal.
  • 6-speed electronic gearbox:
    • Gear in A or M, release brake pedal.
    • Gear in N, brake released, move lever to A or M.
    • Or engage reverse gear.

With manual gearbox in STOP mode, if gear engaged without fully depressing clutch, a warning lamp or message prompts you to depress clutch.

Special Cases: START Invoked Automatically
  • Driver's door opened.
  • Driver's seat belt unfastened.
  • Vehicle exceeds 15 mph (25 km/h) for manual or 7 mph (11 km/h) for 6-speed electronic gearbox.
  • Special conditions (battery, engine temp, braking, ambient temp) where engine control is required.

The "ECO" lamp may flash briefly; this is normal.

Deactivation & Reactivation

Press "ECO OFF" to deactivate. Lamp lights and a message appears. Press again to reactivate; lamp goes off and system resumes. It automatically reactivates with every new ignition start.

Operating Fault

In case of malfunction, "ECO OFF" lamp flashes then stays on. Have it checked by a CITROËN dealer. A fault in STOP mode may stall the vehicle; all warning lamps illuminate, switch off ignition and restart engine.

Maintenance
  • Deactivate Stop & Start before working under the bonnet to avoid injury.
  • Requires a specific battery; using a battery not listed by CITROËN may cause malfunctions.
  • All battery work must be done by a CITROËN dealer or qualified workshop.
