Airbags

General Information

The airbags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupants in the event of a serious collision; they work in conjunction with the force-limiting seat belts.

In the event of a serious collision, electronic detectors record and analyse the front and side impacts suffered in the impact detection zones:

  • In the event of a serious impact, the airbags inflate instantly and contribute towards better protecting the occupants; immediately after the impact, the airbags deflate rapidly so they do not hinder visibility or exit from the vehicle.
  • In the event of a minor or rear impact and in certain roll-over conditions, the airbags will not be deployed; the seat belt alone is sufficient to contribute towards protection.

The seriousness of the collision depends on the nature of the obstacle and the speed of the vehicle at the moment of impact.

Good Practice
  • Sit in a normal upright position and wear a correctly adjusted seat belt.
  • Do not leave anything between the occupants and the airbags (child, pet, object), as this could hinder operation or cause injury.
  • After an accident or if the vehicle has been stolen or broken into, have the airbag systems checked.
  • All work on the airbag system is strictly for qualified personnel at a CITROËN dealer or qualified workshop.
  • Even with precautions, minor burns or injury to the head, chest, or arms may occur when an airbag deploys.
Lateral Airbags

Only use recommended seat covers; these will not hinder lateral airbag inflation. Do not attach anything to the seat backs. Avoid sitting with the upper body too close to the door.

Each lateral airbag is fitted in the front seat backrest frame, on the door side, and deploys unilaterally during a serious side impact applied to the side impact zone (B), perpendicular to the longitudinal centreline.

In minor impacts, bumps, or roll-over, the airbag may not deploy.

Front Airbags

Do not drive holding the steering wheel by its spokes or resting hands on the centre part. Passengers should not place feet on the dashboard. Avoid smoking near deployment, and never pierce or hit the steering wheel violently.

Airbags operate only when ignition is on and only once. Deployment produces harmless smoke and noise, which may cause temporary irritation or slight hearing loss. The passenger's front airbag must be deactivated if a rearward-facing child seat is installed.

Deployment Zones
  • Lateral Airbags: Protects driver and front passenger in serious side impacts.
  • Front Airbags: Deployed in serious front impacts, except the passenger airbag if deactivated.
Deactivating the Passenger Front Airbag
  1. With ignition off, insert the key into the passenger front airbag deactivation switch.
  2. Turn to the "OFF" position.
  3. Remove the key, leaving the switch in the new position.

The passenger airbag warning lamp remains on while deactivated. Reactivate after removing the child seat by turning the switch to "ON".

Operating Fault

If the airbag warning lamp comes on, accompanied by an audible signal and message, contact a CITROËN dealer or qualified workshop. The airbags may no longer deploy in a serious impact.
