Carrying Children

General Points on Child Seats

Although one of CITROËN's main criteria when designing your vehicle, the safety of your children also depends on you.

  • Regulations on carrying children are specific to each country. Refer to local legislation.
  • For maximum safety, observe the following:
    • In accordance with European regulations, all children under 12 years old or less than 1.5 m tall must travel in approved child seats suited to their weight, on seats fitted with a seat belt or ISOFIX mountings.
    • Statistically, the safest seats in your vehicle for carrying children are the rear seats.
    • A child weighing less than 9 kg must travel in the rearward-facing position, both in the front and rear.
Child Seat at the Front
Rearward Facing

When a rearward-facing child seat is installed on the front passenger seat, the passenger's front airbag must be deactivated. Otherwise, the child risks serious injury or death if the airbag deploys.

Adjust the vehicle's seat to:

  • Fully back position, backrest straightened (seat without height adjuster).
  • Fully back and highest position, backrest straightened (seat with height adjuster).
Forward Facing

When a forward-facing child seat is installed on the front passenger seat, the passenger's front airbag must remain active.

Adjust the vehicle's seat to:

  • Fully back position, backrest straightened (seat without height adjuster).
  • Fully back and highest position, backrest straightened (seat with height adjuster).

Ensure that the seat belt is correctly tensioned. For child seats with a support leg, ensure it is in steady contact with the floor. If not, adjust the passenger seat. Refer to local legislation before installing a child in this position.

Passenger's Front Airbag

Never install a rearward-facing child restraint on a seat protected by an active front airbag. This could cause death or serious injury. The warning label on both sides of the passenger's sun visor repeats this advice.

For information on deactivating the passenger's front airbag, refer to the "Airbags" section.

Advice on Child Seats

Incorrect installation compromises child protection in an accident. Ensure no seat belt or buckle is under the child seat. Fasten seat belts or harnesses snugly, even for short journeys.

For installation using a seat belt, ensure the belt is tensioned and the child seat is firmly held against the vehicle's seat. Move the front passenger seat forward if necessary. Leave sufficient space for rearward-facing or forward-facing child seats.

For optimum installation of a forward-facing child seat, ensure the back of the child seat is close to or in contact with the vehicle's seat backrest. Remove the head restraint before installing a child seat with a backrest and refit it after removal. Ensure the head restraint is stowed securely to prevent movement during braking.
