Changing a Flat Tire*

If a tire goes flat while driving, grasp the steering wheel firmly and brake gradually to reduce speed. Stop in a safe place and replace the flat tire with a compact spare tire. Go to a dealer as soon as possible to repair or replace the full-size tire.

  1. Park on a firm, level, non-slippery surface and apply the parking brake.
  2. Move the shift lever to (P or R as applicable).
  3. Turn on hazard warning lights and set ignition to LOCK.

Notice: Do not use the jack if it does not work properly. Follow compact spare precautions:

  • Check compact spare tire pressure periodically (60 psi / 420 kPa).
  • Do not exceed 50 mph (80 km/h) with compact spare.
  • Do not use tire chains on a compact spare.

Placing the Compact Spare Tire

  1. Place the compact spare (wheel side up) near the tire to be replaced.
  2. Remove wheel cover using jack handle bar wrapped in cloth.
  3. Loosen each wheel nut about one turn with the wheel nut wrench.

How to Set Up the Jack

  1. Place the jack under the jacking point closest to the tire.
  2. Turn the end bracket clockwise until the jack contacts the jacking point.
  3. Raise the vehicle using the jack handle bar until tire is off the ground.

Warning: Do not use the jack with people or luggage in the vehicle. Follow all safety instructions carefully.

Replacing the Flat Tire

  1. Remove wheel nuts and flat tire.
  2. Clean mounting surfaces.
  3. Mount compact spare tire.
  4. Screw wheel nuts until they touch the lips of mounting holes.
  5. Lower vehicle and remove jack.
  6. Tighten wheel nuts in specified order 2–3 times. Torque: 80 lbf∙ft (108 N∙m, 11 kgf∙m).

Notice: Do not over-tighten nuts with extra force. Ensure wire support ring is hooked on wheel cover clips.

Storing the Flat Tire

  1. Remove center cap.
  2. Place flat tire face down in spare tire well.
  3. Remove spacer cone from wing bolt, flip, and reinsert.
  4. Securely put jack and wheel nut wrench in tool case in trunk.

Warning: Loose items can fly around the interior in a crash. Store tools securely.

TPMS and the Compact Spare Tire

If you replace a flat with the spare tire, the low tire pressure/TPMS indicator will come on, blink, and then stay on. Calibrate TPMS when replacing with a regular tire. Manually check spare tire pressure.

Temporarily Repairing a Flat Tire*

Use the tire repair kit only for small punctures (e.g., nails) to drive to a service station for permanent repair. Do not use if:

  • Tire sealant expired
  • More than one tire punctured
  • Puncture/cut larger than 3/16 inch (4.8 mm)
  • Tire sidewall damaged
  • Tire bead not seated
  • Rim damaged
  • Damage from extreme under-inflation

Do not remove the nail/screw puncturing the tire.
