Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
Provides steering input to help keep the vehicle in the middle of a detected lane and provides tactile and visual alerts if the vehicle is detected drifting out of its lane.
Important Safety Reminders
- The LKAS is for convenience only; it is not a substitute for vehicle control.
- The system does not work if you take your hands off the steering wheel or fail to steer.
- Do not place objects on the instrument panel as reflections may interfere with lane detection.
- LKAS only alerts when lane drift is detected without a turn signal in use. Accuracy may vary based on weather, speed, and lane marker condition.
- Always operate the vehicle safely and avoid collisions.
- The LKAS is convenient on freeways but may not work properly under certain conditions. LKAS Conditions and Limitations P. 519
System Operation
- When turn signals are used, the system is suspended and resumes after the signals are off.
- If a lane change is made without turn signals, LKAS alerts activate and steering torque is applied.
Features
- Front Sensor Camera: Monitors lane lines.
- Tactile and visual alerts: Rapid steering wheel vibrations and warning display alert drifting.
- Steering input assist: Torque is applied to keep the vehicle between lane lines; torque increases as vehicle nears lane edges.
Conditions to Use LKAS
- Detectable lane markers on both sides, vehicle centered.
- Vehicle speed 45–90 mph (72–145 km/h).
- Straight or slightly curved road.
- Turn signals off.
- Brake pedal not depressed.
- Wipers not in high-speed operation.
Activating the System
- Press the MAIN button. LKAS indicator comes on.
- Press the LKAS button. Lane outlines appear; system is activated.
- Keep vehicle near the center of the lane; dotted outer lines change to solid when operating.
Canceling LKAS
- Press the MAIN or LKAS button.
- LKAS turns off every time engine stops.
Suspension Conditions
- High-speed wipers: LKAS resumes when speed reduces.
- Vehicle speed ≤40 mph (64 km/h): LKAS resumes at ≥45 mph (72 km/h).
- Brake pedal depressed: LKAS resumes when released.
Automatic Suspension
- Fails to detect lane lines.
- Steering wheel quickly turned.
- Driver fails to steer.
- Sharp curve or speed >90 mph (145 km/h).
Automatic Cancellation
- Extreme camera temperatures or dirty camera/windshield area.
- ABS or VSA® systems engaged.
Limitations
System may not detect lane markings under certain conditions:
- Environmental: Bad weather, sudden light changes, low contrast, direct sunlight, shadows, reflections, nighttime or tunnels.
- Roadway: Snowy/wet roads, temporary or faded lane markings, merging/split/crossing lines, narrow/wide lanes, hilly or bumpy roads, obstructions misread as lines.
- Vehicle: Dirty headlights or windshield, fogged interior windshield, high camera temperature, abnormal tires, vehicle tilt, tire chains installed.
Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) System
Alerts and assists when the vehicle may unintentionally cross lane markings or leave the roadway. Uses front camera behind rearview mirror to monitor lane markings. Applies steering torque and tactile alerts to keep vehicle within lane.
Important Safety Reminder
- Over-reliance on RDM may result in a collision; driver must remain responsible.
- RDM alerts only when lane drift is detected without a turn signal. Accuracy varies by weather, speed, and lane markers.
Activation Conditions
- Vehicle speed 45–90 mph (72–145 km/h).
- Straight or slightly curved road.
- Turn signals off, brake pedal not depressed, wipers not in continuous operation.
- Vehicle not accelerating/braking or steering; system detects driver is not actively controlling.
Using the RDM System
- Press RDM button to turn system on/off. Indicator lights up and message appears on driver information interface.
- Warning Only mode disables steering/braking assist.
Limitations
- Environmental: Bad weather, light changes, low contrast, direct sunlight, shadows, reflections, nighttime or tunnels.
- Roadway: Snowy/wet, temporary/faded lane markings, merging/split/crossing lines, narrow/rough/unpaved roads, obstacles recognized as lane lines, double lines.
- Vehicle: Dirty or misaligned headlights, blocked/fogged windshield, high camera temperature, abnormal tires, vehicle tilt, tire chains installed.
