Honda Civic

Front Sensor Camera

The camera, used in systems such as LKAS, RDM, ACC*, ACC with LSF*, and CMBS™, detects objects that trigger these systems. It is located behind the rearview mirror.

Camera Handling Tips

  • Park in the shade or face the vehicle away from the sun to avoid high interior temperatures affecting the camera.
  • Do not allow reflective sun shades to cover the camera housing.
  • Never apply film or attach objects to the windshield, hood, or grille that may obstruct the camera.
  • Scratches or damage to the windshield in the camera's field of view may cause system malfunctions. Replace with a genuine Honda windshield if needed and recalibrate the camera at a dealer.
  • Do not place objects on the instrument panel that may reflect onto the windshield.

If Driver Assist Systems Cannot Operate

  • Camera Temperature Too High: Use climate control to cool interior or defroster airflow toward the camera. Driving lowers windshield temperature.
  • Clean Front Windshield: Park safely and clean the windshield. If the message persists, contact a dealer.

Radar Sensor

The radar sensor is located in the lower bumper.

  • Avoid strong impacts to the sensor cover.
  • Keep sensor cover clean; do not use solvents or stickers. Use water or mild detergent.
  • If the sensor needs repair, turn off the system using the CMBS OFF button and visit a dealer.
  • Check the radar sensor after collisions, driving through deep water, or strong impacts.

Parking Brake

To release automatically:

  • Depress the accelerator pedal to release the parking brake when starting uphill or in traffic.
  • On manual cars, depress clutch and gently press accelerator to release.
  • Parking brake cannot release automatically if certain indicators are on, e.g., Malfunction lamp, Transmission, ABS, VSA®, or Brake system indicator.

Manual Transmission Models

  • Accelerator pedal must be fully depressed along with clutch to release the brake.
  • Brake release conditions: seatbelt fastened, engine running, transmission not in P or N.

Brake Systems

Foot Brake

Vehicles have disc brakes on all wheels. ABS and brake assist systems help maintain steering control and increase braking force during emergencies.

Brake Check Tips

  • Dry brakes after driving through water by lightly depressing the pedal.
  • Brake wear indicator sound signals pad replacement.
  • Do not rest foot on brake while driving; reduces effectiveness and pad life.
  • Engine braking recommended on long descents or using lower gears on manual transmissions.

Automatic Brake Hold

Keeps brakes applied after releasing the pedal until accelerator is pressed. Can be used at traffic lights or in heavy traffic.

Warnings

  • Do not rely on brake hold on steep or slippery roads; vehicle may move unexpectedly.
  • Never leave vehicle unattended with brake hold active; always park using P and parking brake.

Turning On / Activating

  • Fasten seatbelt, start engine, press Automatic Brake Hold button.
  • Depress brake pedal to stop; indicator comes on and holds braking for up to 10 minutes.
  • Release brake pedal after indicator lights.

Canceling / Turning Off

  • Depress accelerator pedal or shift lever to move; indicator goes off.
  • System automatically cancels when parking brake is applied, brake pedal pressed and shift lever in P/R, brake hold exceeds 10 min, seatbelt unfastened, engine off, system problem, or engine stalls.
  • To manually turn off, press Automatic Brake Hold button while system is active.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)

Prevents wheels from locking and helps retain steering control. EBD distributes braking based on vehicle load. Maintain firm, steady pressure on the pedal (“stomp and steer”).

ABS Operation

  • Pulsates slightly when active.
  • May activate immediately on snow/ice; takes longer on dry pavement.
  • Can activate on wet, stone, or uneven roads.
  • Stops below 6 mph (10 km/h).

Notice

  • ABS may malfunction with incorrect tire size or type.
  • If ABS indicator illuminates, braking remains functional, but ABS may not operate. Check with dealer immediately.
  • ABS is designed to prevent lockup, not reduce stopping distance.

Brake Assist System

Assists by generating greater braking force during emergency braking. Press brake firmly; pedal may wiggle and noise heard, which is normal.

Parking Your Vehicle

  1. Depress brake firmly.
  2. With brake depressed, pull electric parking brake fully.
  3. Shift to P.
  4. Turn off engine; brake system indicator goes off in ~15 seconds.

Warnings

  • Vehicle can roll if Park is not confirmed. Always keep foot on brake until P is engaged.
  • Do not depress accelerator and brake simultaneously or move shift to P before stopping.
  • Do not park near flammable objects; exhaust heat may ignite.
  • In cold temperatures, parking brake may freeze; take precautions on slopes.
