Honda Civic

Auto High-Beam*

The front sensor camera detects light sources ahead of the vehicle such as the lights of a preceding or oncoming vehicle, or street lights. When driving at night, the system automatically switches the headlights between low beam and high beam depending on the situation.

When all of the following conditions are met, the auto high-beam indicator comes on and the system is activated:

  • The power mode is in ON.
  • The light switch is in AUTO.
  • The lever is in the low beam position.
  • The headlights have been automatically activated.
  • It is dark outside the vehicle.

If the auto high-beam indicator does not come on even when all conditions are met, pull the lever toward you to flash the high beams, then release it while driving.

Important: The auto high-beam system assists the driver but does not operate in every situation. Always observe surroundings and switch headlights manually if necessary.

The recognition range and distance of the camera vary depending on surrounding conditions. For handling precautions of the camera mounted inside the windshield, refer to the Front Sensor Camera section.

For Proper Operation

  • Do not place reflective objects on the dashboard.
  • Keep the windshield around the camera clean.
  • Do not apply windshield cleaner directly to the camera lens.
  • Do not attach stickers, film, or objects around the camera.
  • Do not touch the camera lens.

If the camera receives a strong impact or the surrounding area requires repair, consult a dealer.

How to Use the Auto High-Beam

Automatic Switching

When active, the headlights automatically switch between high beam and low beam based on driving conditions.

Manual Switching

If you manually switch the headlights, the auto high-beam indicator turns off and the system is deactivated.

  • Using the lever: Pull the lever toward you to flash the high beams, then release it within about one second while driving.
  • Using the light switch: Turn the light switch away from AUTO.

To reactivate auto high-beam, pull the lever again or return the light switch to AUTO with the lever in the low beam position.

Conditions Affecting Operation

The system may not operate properly or switching timing may change in the following situations:

  • Very bright or very dim lights from other vehicles.
  • Poor visibility due to rain, snow, fog, or frost.
  • Strong surrounding light sources such as street lights or billboards.
  • Frequently changing brightness of the road.
  • Bumpy roads or roads with many curves.
  • Sudden appearance of vehicles.
  • Vehicle tilted due to heavy rear load.
  • Strong reflections from traffic signs or mirrors.
  • Motorcycles, bicycles, or other small vehicles ahead.

The system keeps low beam when windshield wipers operate at high speed or when dense fog is detected.

Switching Conditions

Switching to High Beam
  • Vehicle speed is 25 mph (40 km/h) or more.
  • No preceding or oncoming vehicles with lights on.
  • Few street lights ahead.
Switching to Low Beam
  • Vehicle speed is 15 mph (24 km/h) or less.
  • Preceding or oncoming vehicle detected.
  • Many street lights ahead.

How to Turn Off / On the Auto High-Beam

Set the power mode to ON and ensure the vehicle is stationary.

  • To turn OFF: With the light switch in AUTO, pull and hold the lever for at least 40 seconds. Release it after the indicator blinks twice.
  • To turn ON: With the light switch in AUTO, pull and hold the lever for at least 30 seconds. Release it after the indicator blinks once.
If the system is turned off, it will not operate until turned on again. Always park in a safe place before changing settings.

System Messages

If a camera temperature or windshield cleanliness message appears:

  • Cool the interior using climate control or defroster.
  • Drive the vehicle to reduce windshield temperature.
  • Clean the windshield if instructed.
  • If the message remains, have the vehicle inspected by a dealer.

* Not available on all models.
