Volkswagen PASSAT

Airbag system

Introduction

  • The vehicle is equipped with a front airbag for the driver and the front passenger.
  • Front airbags provide additional protection for the chest and head when seats, safety belts, head restraints, and steering wheel are correctly adjusted.
  • Airbags are designed as supplementary protection only.
  • Airbags are not a replacement for safety belts.
  • Safety belts must always be worn, even if the vehicle is equipped with airbags.

WARNING

  • Never rely only on the airbag system for protection.
  • Even when an airbag deploys, it provides only supplementary protection.
  • The airbag system provides optimum protection only when the safety belt is worn correctly ⇒ Safety belts.
  • Before every trip, all occupants must sit correctly and fasten their safety belts.

WARNING

  • Sitting too close to the steering wheel or instrument panel reduces airbag effectiveness and increases injury risk.
  • Adjust the driver’s seat so there is at least 25 cm (10 inches) between chest and steering wheel.
  • Adjust the front passenger seat to maintain the greatest possible distance from the instrument panel.
  • If this distance cannot be achieved, consult an authorized Volkswagen dealer or service facility.
  • Incorrect seating positions significantly increase the risk of injury.
  • Ensure safety belts are fastened correctly at all times.
  • Never use rear-facing child restraints on the front passenger seat.
  • Children under 12 years of age must always sit in the rear seats.
  • Secure children with suitable child restraint systems according to their height and weight.
  • Adjust front seats correctly and keep backrests upright.
  • Always keep feet in the footwell while driving.

WARNING

  • Objects between occupants and the airbag deployment zone increase injury risk.
  • Never hold objects in your hands or on your lap while driving.
  • Do not place objects on the front passenger seat.
  • Ensure no people, animals, or objects are between occupants and the airbag deployment zones.

WARNING

  • The airbag system provides protection for only one deployment.
  • After deployment, the airbag system must be replaced.
  • Only authorized and qualified professionals should repair or modify the airbag system.
  • Never install used or recycled airbag components.
  • Never modify any airbag system components.

WARNING

  • Fine dust and water vapor may be released when airbags deploy; this is normal.
  • The dust may irritate skin, eyes, or respiratory systems.
  • Exit the vehicle or ventilate it with fresh air after airbag deployment.
  • Wash hands and face with mild soap and water after contact with airbag dust.
  • Avoid contact with eyes or open wounds.

WARNING

  • Cleaners containing solvents can damage airbag module surfaces.
  • Never clean airbag modules or instrument panels with solvent-based cleaners.
