Follow the grid shown on knob 1. The reversing light will come on as soon as reverse gear is selected (ignition on). An impact to the underside of the vehicle (e.g., striking a post, raised kerb or other street furniture) may result in damage to the vehicle (e.g., deformation of an axle). To prevent any risk of accident, have your vehicle checked by an approved dealer.
To release: Pull lever 2 up slightly, press button 3, and then lower the lever to the floor.
To apply: Pull lever 2 upwards and make sure the vehicle is immobilised. When the vehicle is stopped, depending on the gradient and/or vehicle load, it may be necessary to apply the handbrake by at least two further notches and engage a gear (1st or reverse). When driving, make sure the handbrake is completely released. Risk of overheating.
Depending on the road conditions, turning selector 1 enables the following modes to be selected:
To activate, turn selector 1 to “AUTOâ€. This mode automatically distributes engine torque between front and rear axles according to road conditions and vehicle speed, optimising roadholding. Use on any type of road or when towing. This mode is not indicated on the instrument panel.
Turn selector 1 to “2WDâ€. The indicator light will illuminate. This mode uses the front wheels only. Use on dry roads with good grip. Off-road driving requires specific training; safety depends on driver skill and care.
Excessive wheelspin may cause mechanical components to overheat. If this occurs:
System may switch automatically depending on speed or tyre differences. Warning lights indicate faults. Drive moderately to approved dealer if lights are on.
Turn selector to “4WD Lockâ€. The selector returns to “AUTOâ€. The indicator light will illuminate. This mode distributes torque between front and rear axles for off-road performance (mud, steep slopes, sand). To deactivate, turn selector to “4WD Lock†again; the indicator light goes out. System remains active for 1 minute after engine off.
Deactivate ESP on soft ground (sand, mud, deep snow) via the “ESP†switch. Only individual wheel braking remains active, transferring torque to wheels with most grip. ESP reactivates at ~30 mph (50 km/h) or engine restart, or pressing the button again.
If a fault occurs, system switches to “2WD†and warning lights illuminate. Certain faults may prevent switching modes; “AUTO†remains active. Stop vehicle to allow system to cool (~5 min). Excessive front wheel spin reduces torque.
In “4WD Lockâ€, ABS switches to off-road mode. Wheels may lock intermittently to improve grip. This reduces braking distances on soft ground. Manoeuvrability is limited during braking; some noise is normal and not a fault.
