Starting and Operating
New Vehicle Break-In
Caution: The vehicle does not need an elaborate break-in. But it will perform better in the long run if you follow these guidelines:
- Keep the vehicle speed at 88 km/h (55 mph) or less for the first 805 km (500 mi).
- Do not drive at any one constant speed, fast or slow, for the first 805 km (500 mi). Do not make full-throttle starts. Avoid downshifting to brake or slow the vehicle.
Caution (Continued):
- Avoid making hard stops for the first 322 km (200 mi) or so. New brake linings are not yet broken in. Follow this guideline every time you get new brake linings.
- Do not tow a trailer during break-in. See Trailer Towing for trailer towing capabilities and more information.
Following break-in, engine speed and load can be gradually increased.
Ignition Positions (Key Access)
0. Stopping the Engine/LOCK/OFF
1. ACC/ACCESSORY
2. ON/RUN
3. START
The ignition switch has four positions. To shift out of P (Park), the ignition must be ON/RUN and the brake pedal must be applied.
0 (Stopping the Engine/LOCK/OFF)
This position turns off the vehicle. It also locks the ignition, transmission, and steering column if equipped.
- Make sure the vehicle is stopped.
- Shift to P (Park).
- Continue to hold the brake pedal, then set the parking brake.
- Push the key all the way in toward the steering column, then turn the key to LOCK/OFF.
- Remove the key.
- Release the brake pedal.
Retained Accessory Power (RAP) will remain active. A warning chime will sound when the driver door is opened and the key is in the ignition.
Warning: Turning off the vehicle while moving may cause loss of power assist in the brake and steering systems and disable the airbags. Only turn off the vehicle in an emergency.
1 (ACC/ACCESSORY)
This position allows features such as the infotainment system to operate while the vehicle is off. It also unlocks the steering column, if equipped.
2 (ON/RUN)
This position can be used to operate electrical accessories and display instrument cluster lights. The switch stays in this position when the engine is running.
3 (START)
This position starts the engine. Release the key when the engine starts. The ignition returns to ON/RUN for driving.
Ignition Positions (Keyless Access)
Vehicles with Keyless Access have pushbutton starting. The RKE transmitter must be in the vehicle.
Warning: Turning off the vehicle while moving may cause loss of power assist and disable airbags. Only shut off the vehicle in an emergency.
Starting the Engine
If the vehicle has a diesel engine, see the Duramax diesel supplement.
Caution: Adding electrical parts or accessories could change engine operation and may not be covered by the warranty.
- Move the shift lever to P (Park) or N (Neutral).
- For Key Access vehicles, turn the ignition key to Start. For Keyless Access vehicles, press ENGINE START/STOP with the brake pedal applied.
- Do not race the engine immediately after starting. Operate the engine and transmission gently until oil warms up.
Engine Heater
If equipped, the engine heater can provide easier starting in cold weather (≤ −18 °C / 0 °F). Plug in at least four hours before starting.
Warning: Do not plug in the engine block heater while parked in a garage or under a carport. Property damage or injury may result.
Retained Accessory Power (RAP)
When the ignition is turned from on to off, certain features may continue to function for up to 10 minutes or until the driver door is opened:
