Airbag System
The vehicle has the following airbags:
- Frontal airbag for the driver
- Frontal airbag for the front outboard passenger
- Seat-mounted side impact airbag for the driver
- Seat-mounted side impact airbag for the front outboard passenger
- Roof-rail airbag for the driver and the passenger seated directly behind the driver
- Roof-rail airbag for the front outboard passenger and the passenger seated directly behind the front outboard passenger
All vehicle airbags have the word AIRBAG on the trim or on a label near the deployment opening. Frontal airbags have AIRBAG on the steering wheel (driver) and instrument panel (passenger). Seat-mounted side impact airbags have AIRBAG on the side of the seatback. Roof-rail airbags have AIRBAG on the ceiling or trim.
Airbags supplement seat belts. They inflate very quickly to provide protection.
Warning: You can be severely injured or killed if not wearing your seat belt, even with airbags. Airbags work with seat belts, not instead of them. Airbags do not inflate in every crash. Always wear seat belts properly. Sit back and upright for maximum protection. Keep children secured properly.
The vehicle has an airbag readiness light on the instrument cluster to indicate system malfunctions. See Airbag Readiness Light.
Airbag Locations
- Driver frontal airbag: center of steering wheel
- Passenger frontal airbag: instrument panel
- Driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags: side of seatback closest to door
The vehicle may automatically unlock doors, turn on interior lamps, activate hazard flashers, and shut off the fuel system after airbag deployment or certain events exceeding thresholds. Damaged systems may not function properly after a crash. Exercise caution if restarting the engine post-crash.
Warning: Crashes that deploy airbags may also damage vehicle functions like fuel, brake, and steering systems. Airbags inflate once. Replacement of airbag modules and related parts is required after deployment. Only qualified technicians should service airbag systems.
Passenger Sensing System
The front outboard passenger position has a sensing system. The indicator on the overhead console shows airbag status. Child restraints should be used in the rear seat whenever possible.
If the Off Indicator Is Lit for an Adult-Sized Occupant
- Turn the vehicle off.
- Remove additional materials from the seat (blankets, cushions, seat covers, heaters, massagers).
- Place seatback fully upright.
- Have the occupant sit upright and centered on the seat cushion.
- If the shoulder belt is fully extended, the child restraint locking feature may engage. Unbuckle and let belt retract fully, then buckle again.
- Restart the vehicle and have the occupant remain in position for 2–3 minutes after the ON indicator lights.
Warning: If the airbag is turned off for an adult-sized occupant, it will not inflate, increasing the risk of serious injury or death. Adult-sized occupants should not sit in that seat if the OFF indicator is lit.
Additional Factors Affecting System Operation
Seat belts help maintain occupant position during maneuvers and braking, aiding the passenger sensing system. Thick layers of blankets, cushions, or aftermarket equipment (seat covers, heaters, massagers) can affect system operation. Avoid using aftermarket equipment unless necessary.
